starter brand x vs factory rebuilt

So the starter on my 91 went bad. I was debating whether or not I was going to pony up for the Bosch starter or a cheaper remanned unit. I thought I would pull the old one and see what the PO put in. To my amazement it is the original Mitsubishi starter. Which adds another factor to my decision. Have the factory starter rebuilt. The factory starter has lasted 27 years but I have never been a fan of rebuilt or remaned anything. That being said, I live a block away from a very reputable re-builder and do like to support the local guys.

Does anyone know of any updates made to these starters that would make it reasonable to spend twice the money.

91 wrangler auto 4.0ltr. $60 to rebuild $115 for the Bosch. I do know there are some cheaper remanned starters out there but....

I have never had a problem with rebuilt jeep starters. The one i have now is a rebuilt i think i got at advance auto parts for about $100 well over 10 years ago (jeep sat for 8 years but it has still got a lot of use and spent time under water). The reason i put it in was because i bought a $330 Mean Green starter as an "upgrade" when my factory starter died back in the 90's. The Mean Green starters do not last i went though 3 during it's warranty period. The Mean green does not tolerate mud and water they die easy.

I had no idea that Mitsubishi made the original starter i kinda figured it was Denso. If i had a choice of re-builders i would buy a Denso but original jeep starters seem to be extremely durable and take rebuilds well, or i have just gotten lucky with the ones i have ended up with.

I have the worst of all worlds. A rebuilt brand X.
When I bought the Jeep it needed a Bendix drive. A re-man starter was a couple bucks more than a new Bendix drive, so I decided on a complete starter assembly.
That was 4 years ago and I haven't had any issues with the starter at all.

Good Luck, L.M.

I've been turning wrenches for 30 years and have heard of just about every imaginable brand of starter being junk.... so far I've used just about all of them and have had great success with ALL of them...

I replaced my original Mitsubishi starter almost 2 months ago with a reman unit from CarQuest. I too was hesitant about a reman unit, however my replacement has been great so far.

Here's a short video I made while changing the starter:

It is crazy on some parts. I have had the opposite experience. My original starter went bad and I swapped the parts store one out 4 times over a 8 month period. So I went to the dealership and bought a factory replacement, at the time they were new units. Since then no more issues, and that's going on almost 20 years ago. Now if you guys jinxed me I'm going to be ticked haha!!!

Many outfits will rebuild your existing starter, I have always went that route with my Jeeps and have had zero issues.
