Still searching, here’s another one

Still looking for Jeep, it just seems at every corner there is some roadblock (rust, overpriced, etc.)

Opinions on the one below.


1990 Jeep Wrangler 4x4- $5,600
Completely rebuilt straight 6 4.2 L
5speed manual transmission
Clean title
Zero accidents perfect carfax!
New clutch
Everything works as it should
Super nice Wrangler
Runs and rides perfect
4WD works perfect
Has a new Bikini top
Has a new cover for the rain
I have red doors that will go with it as well that need painted to match.
New full exhaust system
Very clean Jeep
Body has 140k miles
Motor has about 20 miles on it

Obviously rust will be an issue to look for. Seller says there is minimal surface rust on the frame.

Also, I checked the AutoCheck and it did spend some time (8 years)in NY (salt on roads) before being Florida and there appears to be a 10 year gap for which there is no renewal of registration.

I'd be hard pressed to believe anybody would spend the investment on re-building the motor that cleanly with a rusty frame, It may be a keeper....

My first mod out of the gate would the Howell FI kit and a DUI if that helps the 4.2 argument.

I owned a 2005 TJ with a 4.0 liter and ran into the OPDA issue with has been me a little gunshy.

Once you learn what your doing working on 'em, it's a piece of cake. I spend a lot of time on trying to prevent stuff from going wrong, that nothing ever does.

Nothing wrong with the 4.0's, have had a couple xj's myself, Just hate dealing with wires and vac lines. LOL

I'd question why a person would go to the trouble and expense to rebuild a motor and then sell the jeep with just 20 miles on the motor.

I'm happy with my 4.2. Not as much horsepower as a 4.0 but it's a torquemonster. For me, having a 4.2 is a plus.

I suggest looking it over very carefully and maybe even bring an experienced Jeeper along for your inspection/test drive.

NEVER, NEVER send any money in advance to "hold" the vehicle.
Always ask to see the title prior to your inspection. Then, compare the VIN on the vehicle to the VIN on the title. If the seller can't show you a clean title, or if the VINs don't match, walk away without even looking at the Jeep.
I've been buying and selling vehicles all my life (retired body shop owner). I've come up with certain procedures that have saved me a lot of time and money through the years.
I've heard all kinds of stories like "I lost the title but you can get one easily. All you have to do is.....Blah,blah,blah". Or, "It's titled in my girlfriends name. She's not here right now". (She was in jail).
No title...No lookie!!

Colorado requires the seller to provide a certificate of passing emissions. Look into the emission requirements of your state. If that Jeep has a MC2100 carb, it won't pass California's strict visual inspection.

Same here. I'm currently in the process of replacing the water pump on my 95. Bought it and a couple months later it kicked out. Its the original though with 130k on it.

I remember my '88 YJ had the 4.2l. I was very young and it was my first used jeep I ever bought. I always felt it was zippy around town. I really liked it. I never did any interstate traveling so I never found out what it really was capable of. Mainly drove it around a small town and was impressed by it. Thanks Lucky, it's a dealership so maybe they got it on the cheap had the engine rebuilt for a better/quicker turnaround. The title information is definitely one of my top questions for sure.

I'm in Florida so no emissions issues that I'm aware of.

Spider, that OPDA issue almost made me never buy a Jeep again and look more towards old Landcruisers and FJ's as my play vehicle. The money, frustration, break downs, pain trying to sell it etc. caused all kinds of problems. That issue alone is why I pretty much look to this forum before I do anything related to a Jeep again.

Get receipts for all the work done or it didn't happen. That's been my philosophy for a long time. Get it on a lift to see the 4wd works.

The dealer didn't invest $3K to replace the motor in a vehicle that they'll end up selling for $5K. Even if they got it for free, they'd simply wholesale it for $2500.00 or more.
They probably took it in trade on a newer Jeep because the PO was tired of throwing any more money into it (if it in fact has a rebuilt motor).

Looking at the pic of the passenger side of the motor, I'm speculating that the PO rebuilt the motor. An orange block with a silver head sure doesn't look like any Jasper motor I've ever seen. I can't imagine a mechanic painting the motor like that. If anything, I'm sure they'd paint the whole thing black, like a factory motor.

If Carfax or whatever company you used to get the info on the Jeep can help you discover who the Previous Owner is, I suggest contacting that person and asking him/her what they did to the Jeep and why they traded it to the dealer.

Is it common in Florida to offer to sell Jeeps without tops?
