The retarded PO thread!!

Im making this thread so that everyone can come and rant about how stupid the PO (previous owner)of their jeep is. so come on everyone just get it off your chest.

Ill go ahead and start this one off. today i decided to check my tranny fluid because it was one of the few things i haven't checked since i bought my jeep a few months ago...even though the guy said allthe fluids had been changed within the last couple hundred miles. it was a little low but that didn't concern me too much. since i was already on the ground i decided to go ahead and check the t-case too. pull the fill plug and stick my finger in it and it comes out dry!. freak out and pull the drain plug... NOTHING!!!!!!. ... your turn.

Had a chrome "4x4" badge on the back of the Jeep. Took a hairdryer a pulled it off real quick. Not sure if it was the PO, but it was a PO.

Lady I bought my 90 2.5L YJ on P205's said it was "Peppy" around town...

She didnt want to sell it to the last guy that looked at it, he wanted to do a big lift and tires, there was no way her little jeep would be sold to a person like that....

Sorry lady, I didnt tell you something...

Her biggest mistake?
Aftermarket A/C and a Chrysler alarm, none of it worked, and was fun removing...

So I got my 95 Rio about a month ago, and the guy told me to take care of his Baby!!! So here's how he treated his baby... Spark plugs... Shot. Plug wires... Cracked and falling apart. Told me those things were changed just a year ago. Oil change still had 2000 miles was what I was told, oil was black and older than dirt. Guy doesn't even know what size lift the jeep has. Here's my favorite... Stripped out two star pattern bolts, because he thought they were Allen wrench!? [email protected]$$.

Chrome trim rings on the steel rims were the worst I had to deal with.

Just got an 88 Wrangler a few weeks ago. PO said rebuilt motor and trans 10k ago. He couldnt figure out why it was blowing so much oil out the air cleaner and the valve cover. I go to change the valve cover gasket and I didnt need a socket. Every bolt was finger tight!!! No more leaks now!!! ( I am sure I will find a whole lot more issues)

I bought a 1992 4.0 about a month ago. Have not been able to drive it because once I got it home and started cleaning it up I found a bunch of stuff. Had oil in the air cleaner and the filter was soaked with oil. I started looking and noticed that the PCV was broke and was duct taped in the hole. Had a major oil leak once I started cleaning the engine off and had to replace the rear main seal, oil pan gasket (a few bolts were missing) and the valve cover gasket was gone. I also had to replace bolts in the valve cover. Once I took the valve cover off I found coolant on the rocker arms. When I pulled the dip stick in front of the PO there was no sign of water in the oil. Also the front drive shaft was out and I had the PO fix that before I left his house. I only paid 3000.00 for it and I could have prob talked him down lower but that was my own fault. At least I got a hard top and bikini top and high lift jack in the deal. Also the PO did not know anything about electrical because he had wires running all over the place. it looked like a rats nest under the dash nothing secured just ran wire and did not secure it up out of sight.

Pretty sure the PO of mine traded in a lifted 2004 Rubicon on 35's for a Mercedes C class... but you won't hear me complaining!

I LOVE it when sellers think they can tell people what they can't do to something. We were looking at a Toyota RAV-4, 100% original and only 85,000 miles for my mom. Could have used a fresh paint job, but the tires were the worst part. They were the originals with about 20% tread left and they were cracked to hell. Even worse was the guy said he wouldn't sell to someone who was just going to toss out the original equipment (we were going to overhaul the sound system and obviously get new slicks), AND we couldn't test drive. We promptly left...

I know your pain!!!!! My dash is a total rats nest. I really need to set aside a couple weekends or something to fully re-wire stuff properly. The cleanest part is the speaker wires which are neatly wrapped together with heat shrink tubing- which I did...

Got my 88 yj off a buy here pay here lot so who knows who the previous owner was, but they didnt know much about engines! They had the 4x4 vacume lines backwards, all the vacume lines in the wrong blaces, 3 types of spark plug wires, and one spark plug that looked original! They even had the vacume line from the brake booster under the throttle linkage so the carb would only travle about 1/4 way open? And they wondered why it had no power! Duh becouse you were only a 1/4 open when you where floored. PEOPLE! lol

Ok. Here's the list:
1. starter was replaced by PO, but never torqued down (gears chewed, and lead wire was burned)
2. timing was 27 degrees retarded (Swear it's true)
3. all rockers were not torqued properly and some were tighter than others
4. fuel pump was not torqued and lever wasn't sitting on the rod properly
5. MC 2100 was way too rich by 3 turns on one screw, 4.5 turns on the other and had SAND in it!
6. NO choke at all!
7. two vacuum lines were reversed
8. valve cover not torqued and leaking oil onto manifold
9. ignition switch was bypassed to use a push button start that was wrapped in electrical tape and laying on the floorboard (He thought this was a selling feature!)
10. doors sitting in back yard next to the YJ for a year
11. vines had grown through the chassis and engine bay for 2 years
12. stereo and speakers wired under the floor rubbing the driveshaft!
13. 3 weeks after I bought it, He came by to give me the title and it was idling in the driveway, He had a look on his face like someone stole his lunch money.

I'm sure I'm forgetting something! Needless to say, I got a heckuva deal on it!
And now His buddies give him a hard time because they see me driving it to work every day!!!! HEHE

By the way-all off my new to me jeeps 35000 miles were "all highway" miles
I went to see an '01 Sahara a week or two ago. I talked to the guy, and he said it was in great shape, never seen off road, low miles, low price. I was hopeful.

And he was right, it had never seen off road... but it also saw some sort of flood. I opened the hood, and everything was corroding and rusting. I asked, 'Never off road, huh?' 'Nope! Clean title!' I bend over by the driver's side door, and just knock on the frame and a chunk of rust fell off onto the floor... I stood up and said, "WHELP! We're done here."

My thought is that it was in New Orleans, and was shipped out before the Insurance company issued it as a complete loss.

I also saw a '00 yesterday. The ad said 'automatic', and it was manual. (This is at a dealership, BTW. I called and asked if it was automatic, they said it was.) The ad on the website was a perfect body. I get there, and it looks like someone took a bat to the car. I popped the hood, the rust was so bad, the FUEL LINE was so rusted out, I slid my finger across it and damn near had to be rushed to the hospital to get a tetanus shot.

I asked him if I could test drive it, and he was like, 'If you drive, you buy today?' (He had a foreign accent) 'I might. I'm not sure. It all depends on how well it drives and runs.' 'It runs well!' 'Listen, I just want to hear it run and take it for a drive... just around the lot. I want to test out the four wheel drive, and how it idles.' 'You buy if you drive and it runs well?' 'That all depends on how it drives.' 'It runs great!'

At this point I saw the circular motion of this conversation and walked off.

These aren't the only horror stories I have...

I saw a '95 YJ, 4 cyl automatic. From what I could tell: The axles were leaking, transfer case was leaking, exhaust leak, there was no coolant in the radiator AND the radiator was rusted on the inside, the interior was gutted with a broken windshield and CJ doors (Which were the nicest part of the whole car). No side mirrors, and the list goes on.

The guy wanted 5.5k for it. & It had 130k miles. (A real winner!)

I knew most of the problems going in, but here is the "stupid" stuff:

PO applied red latex house paint to the steel wheels - with a paint brush.
Had a Nyquil plastic cup electrical taped onto the brake fluid reservior as a cap.
Wired the aftermarket radio wrong. Constantly on and would drain the battery if not disconnected from under the hood.
Forgot to replace one of the port gaskets on the A/C compressor. Found that one when I tried to recharge it.

Jeesh! I guess I was sort of lucky in my purchase.

The list:
-PO says 'no rust at all!' Obviously there was surface rust, but I didnt see anything major, until I got home and stepped on the factory side step and half the rocker panel fell off. There was also a hole rotted in the floor board, the usual. Also found some frame rot in the back.

-PO says 'clutch and serpentine belt was just replaced!' Serpentine belt went on me 3,000 after I bought it. Clutch replaced!? I thought you have to drop the skid plate to do that job. The skid plate bolts were rotted into the frame and had to be cut off to install Tcase drop bracket for my lift.

-PO says 'no leaks and never sat!' Cracked gas line hoses leaking gas. As I drove it every day, they swelled up and stopped leaking, but I still need to replace them.

-PO says 'passenger door gets just a little stuck some times' Had to buy new hinges for both doors and tail gate.

-PO says 'body in great condition!' Tail gate bent, rocker panels rotten, bondo is everywhere, body rot in the back.

The aftermarket head unit sucked and the wires were hanging at my feet. When I got in I could've sworn I had a cigarette in each nostril. There was ash everywhere.

Paid 3000 for it and have put a lot of time, work and money into it..and I would do it all again. It's been a fun first car and a fun project, and its not over yet!

I drove about 2 hours to look at a few in another town. Stop to look at the first and its about what I expected, but not was i was looking for. The second was a 1990 YJ, the right color et cetera. I paid $1000 for it beause he couldnt get it to stop over heating (replaced water pump, thermostat, radiator, et cetera) and drove it home stopping to let it cool before it got hot. Go out there the next day and find the thermostat was in backwards and BENT from the cover being torqued down like that. It's had its quirks, but has no rust (verified by me, jeep was from AZ) and drives just fine at 65+ on the highway. I couldnt be happier.

So, the PO of mine put the asphalt glue heat shied in the tub behind the front seats, covered every single drain plug, then used some industrial glue to glue carpet directly to the tub. It was hell when I went to put my herculiner in it. Took 2 16 hour days to get it clean enough to put it down. I have also yet to do any sort of job on it that didn't end up dealing with at least on cross threaded and/or stripped bolt. He also installed a lift kit and reinstalled the track bars, neither of which were tight at all, and the rear one had a large bolt just hammered into it and didn't even come all the way through. The dash has a ton of wires that just end hanging out of it and a wire for an amp that came directly from the battery to a dead end behind the passengers seat and was stripped about 1/2 inch exposing the wire. He had daylighters hooked up to the head lights and didnt tell me about that. Went to drive home one night and blinded everyone on the road. Thats all I've found so far but I have a feeling I still have plenty of things left to be discovered.

Dumb move: Our PO sold us his YJ for short $$ to buy a Pickup!

Half way through the dissably part of our build I was beginning to wonder if he was the smart one.

Once it was "done" and drivable I let him take it for a couple hours (good friend from work).....he got back and I think he wants to trade a new Ford pickup for our old Jeep!

Bought mine from a friend and everything was good. But its not jeep related but lastnight i ran across a chevy cobalt, with corvette badges on the hood, trunk, and both front fenders... now that was just sick.

Turns out the guy never re-tightened any of the u-bolts after installing a 4" lift. so for an undetermined amount of driving time, the rear axle has been trying to do summer salts under my jeep causing the output seal on the t-case to break and leak and also putting large dents in the backside of the rear shocks.

Wow! I want to find THAT deal! So far the best deal I might've found is an in-pieces YJ for 1.5K, with full suspension and everything, just no drive train or interior. I guess I can buy a 4.0L Grand Cherokee, and gut it and swap out what I need. But, I want to find THAT. Haha.

I just found more stuff wrong...I went out and was messing with the dash and trying to figure out why there is so much static in my speakers. I started tracing wires and found that instead of using butt connectors he just stripped the wire and twisted and taped them together. also not sure where the ground for the radio was hooked up to. started tracing the wires that i guess he had for a sound bar and found over 12 feet of wire wadded up under the door frame. looks like it is going to be a fun afternoon trying to fix everything.

Twisting & Taping usually isn't bad in a pinch. I've never had a problem with it... but I twist, solder, tape. Or use heat shrink when I have it.
