Time for a new Soft Top, but which one???

Its time to replace the Bestop soft top.
Wife wants a Sun Rider so we can have a sun roof without taking the whole thing down.
I was looking at the Frameless Soft Top Kits.

Any opinions on brand, type?

Not looking to spend more than 700 though.

Bestop lists their Sunrider top for $784.00. The ad states it comes with the frame.

You should be able to get something for your old top and hardware. When I went to a hard top I sold my old soft top frame and hardware for a hundred bucks. It sold quickly. I might have been able to get more.
I threw in the fabric, but the fabric was shot. I was going to just throw the fabric in the trash, but my trash can was full, so when the guy came to pick up the frame, I handed him the fabric and he took it.
If your fabric isn't too bad you might be able to get even more. That would get your cost well under $700.00.

Good Luck, L.M.

I put a Bestop NX on my JK, just a week before the jeep was totaled. I was happy with it. Easy to use and quiet for a soft top. I have a Smitty Built soft top on my TJ and it's noisy as hell and I plan to replace it next spring. I am interested in what others here say on your question. I'm wondering if the Quadratech verion of the NX is any good. It's way cheaper than the Bestop.

I have always had good experiences with Bestop tops so thats the only top i will buy. I personally have never liked the look of frameless soft tops they look like silly putty stretched over your knee or Hillary Clinton's face.

For the best sound reduction and winter heat retention get one that's made from sailcloth.

...and when you install it, use nutcerts on the windshield frame and not those damnable sheet metal screws!

I Bought a Smittybuilt Top and am not happy at all. It is too tight to be able to snap the front rails (the rails that connect to the windshield). Because of this, It flaps while driving and the metal snaps hit the metal frame and is annoying as crap. I was hoping it would stretch out over time, but i have had it over a moth and still cannot snap it

I think there a 2 schools when it comes to soft tops. I put the cheapest Q-top I could get with tinted plastic, because for $300. Bucks I can get a new one in a couple years and not stress about tearing it up.
I have no fitment issue with the quadratec top, but they did send me one with 2 left sides, and no right. They sent me a whole new top overnight, and all is well.
Then there is the quality and quieter side to a top end top, but then you have more care and cleaning to attend to.
My Q-top got its first damage a couple weeks in, when I slid down my dune into our walkway taking my jetski down to the beach. Kinda rug burned the top rear corner of the top. I would be pissed at myself if I spent $700 + on that top.
Fyi my last top was an acillies super cheap top new in 06, and lasted till last summer with only a few repairs over the years.

I have the Sunrider. It's nice to be able to have the sunroof option, HOWEVER, the frames squeeks slot, when the sunroof is open.

You dont mention what year your YJ is. It matters because frame-less tops only work on family bars. I have the Rampage frame-less on my 93 which also sports a roof rack so this is the best workable solution. If it didn't have the roof rack I would have preferred a fold down top. I don't know of a frame-less top for the YJ that has a sunrider feature.

Make sure that the frameless tops are available. I know Softtopper was revamping their YJ model.

We're a dying market as YJs are biting the dust daily. So new and cutting edge options are not as plentiful as the newer Wranglers. Even worse with the JL out. We're 4 generations ago now...

Good luck.

Softopper has actually discontinued making tops for YJ's. They still have windows but when those are gone who knows (I didn't ask about the windows). Really disappointed about having to drop some serious cash on a new soft top when mine wears out.

I put a Bestop Super Top on mine last year. Once I got it adjusted and stretched, I'm really liking it. No wind noise, no flapping and no water leaks.
It was expensive, but, I've always gone with " Buy once, Cry once".
I actually pulled my windshield forward (with the top installed) to get the proper tension.

We are not a dying market, we are classic... But yes, harder to find good accessories now.

I was thinking that a TJ/YJ shared platform top would be the norm by now. TJ style top with a kit to retro fit the regular TJ top on the YJ and even the CJ. Then Bestop would only need to sell one top for all pre-JK Wrangler/CJ7.

I know there are folks who converted.

I need a new soft top. I'm looking to just convert my YJ to a TJ top and be done.
