Tire size and engine performance

Hi - I just bought a '93 Wrangler. Its got the 4-cylinder engine and 31x10.5 tires. I live in western Washington state. When I drove it home it could not maintain the speed limit on highway 101 between Aberdeen and Raymond. Do you think this would be because of a tired engine with 220,000 miles on it, or do you think it would be the tall tires? Or maybe both.

Not necessarily anything wrong with motor. That's just the 4 cylinder pushing the steel framed box. Wasn't really ever designed for modern speeds

It probably still has factory 4.10 gears. 4.56 would help. However, that would require putting money into the rear Dana 35 axle. Something I highly recommend not doing.

Basically the oversize tires are more than the 4 cyl can move effectively. Either a higher ratio axle or smaller tires will help some but it really depends on if you plan to run highway speeds or off road speeds in lower transmission gears.

I have a four banger with 33x12.5x15 tires. It just isn't a highway vehicle.

I have a 2.5l with 31x10.50s and don't really have an issue maintaining the speed limits on the freeway. Does it have trouble on hills? Yes. Is it kinda sluggish to get up to speed? Sure. Do I have any other issues with the engine and going 70-75? No. Might have something to do with the 200k+ miles you have on her ticker?

Hi Paul there are some good hills between Aberdeen and Raymond on 101 so I would expect that with the large tires and the 4 banger. Now your speedo could also be off some from the tires don't forget.
