Towing a Toad

Good evening,

I asked the same question on a Winnebago forum, but I want the opinion of fellow YJers too, especially those that tow their YJ with a motorhome. I guess the best way would be to use a trailer. But, I want to get away from trailers since I always towed a 5th wheel. Now we have a class A. A bunch on the other forum mentioned flat towing. My concern is wearing out the frontend faster due to it not being supper tight to begin with, a JK and up no problem... I was considering a dolly. Get the frontend off the ground and just have the rear on the ground.

I do have about a 5" lift which includes the shackles and springs, but not the body. So how do you tow, or, how would you tow given the opportunity? My Class A is 40', another reason a trailer is not a first choice, but will if that's the way to go... Thanks!

Same dolly my next door neighbor uses with his class A. They pull an Explorer but the dolly is what I would recommend. Such an easy hookup. No brainer.

NO.... do not tow a yj w a dolly... yj does not have a true neutral... the front shaft will turn w the rear and will destroy the spider gears or more in the front axle FAST....

Flat tow w a yj is a non issue but ditch the lift shackles first....
Add toad braking and lights... I've flat towed mine many thousands of miles....
T case in N and manual trans in 5th... if auto trans in park

Correct, well, maybe not all but a lot.
If you want to tow with a dolly and want the driveshaft out, you can get a salvage yard yoke and remove the driveshaft and plug the spare yoke into the rear of the transfer case. Secure it with some mechanics wire.
You'll still loose a bit of TC fluid when swapping yokes, so be prepared to add some once the regular driveshaft is back in place.
Before you wire the spare yoke in place, you can drive the Jeep onto the dolly with the TC in 4wd. Then, don't forget to secure the yoke so that it doesn't fall out while on the highway.

Just my opinion. Other posters may disagree. Do what you consider to be the safest.

I second Flat Towing. You will not even realize it is behind you. The only wear would be a very minimal on the tires. If you follow the owner’s manual, T-Case in Neutral, gear box in gear, I use 5th, key turned just to unlock the steering. The speedo doesn’t work as it is electronic so mile won’t rack up either.

Can one disconnect the shaft at the rear end and wire it up..... If they use a dolly.....

Sure, would also need to tape up u joint

This would be for one time towing.... nobody wants to crawl under the jeep every time you hook and unhook...

IE pulled into muddy or snowy parking lot, oops have to back up.... install driveshaft, unload jeep, hook dolly to jeep, move jeep, dolly, and rig, hook dolly up, load jeep, remove drive shaft, hit the road and pray you didn't forget something....

Same scenario w flat tow....
Pull in lot, oops, shift into reverse, back up just like you would w a trailer, front tires of jeep will go full lock and squall as you back up but won't be damaged, then drive on without a care in the world....

For a guy like myself hooking/unhooking and tying up a DS is easier than removing the doors and top for other guys but yes if you are not mechanically inclined then by all means yes flat tow it.

Think I read on hear about a DS disconnect. Don't have a clue about that but may research it as a buddy up North is screaming about some big jeep fest I "must" not miss, LOL! I really don't feel like towing it 500 miles for a one day fest, but I have been known to change my mind. Often.

Edit to add: Now I know what the mysterious 4 holes are for in my front bumper. PO must have had a flat tow bar bolted to those holes. @$$h¤le should have included that bar.

One thing nobody has mentioned.....The dolly has tires. Not a huge factor, but its 2 extra tires in the mix. Tires are not free.

I'm still leaning towards a dolly and have no problem with the DS. Earlier I swapped it out for a Tom Woods. 4 little bolts isn't too difficult....
Our first trip is getting shorter and shorter. May just throw it on a trailer for that one...
