Towing my YJ behind motorhome question?

I'm new to flat towing a Jeep behind my motorhome. I just bought a 92' YJ, 4.0, 5-speed manual. The previous owner said he towed it with the transmission in neutral, but the Jeep manual says to keep the transmission in 1st gear. Should I follow the manual and keep the transmission in 1st? Just wondering why 1st vs neutral? Yes, he always keep the transfer case in neutral. Thanks!

Actually the manual should say "in forward gear"....

I have towed mine many thousands of miles for more than 10 years....
I always put t case in N and trans in 5th...

Towing w trans in N is bad as the output shaft can spin and there is a bushing that does not get lubed without the input side of the trans turning...

You are correct, the owner's manual said "in gear" and did not specify 1st gear. I like your idea of 5th though. Thanks for the help.

That rig looks like about 6MPG. Having fun is expensive. Being safe is priceless.

Good Luck, L.M.

Btw don't forget to add towing brakes to your jeep.... yes it's expensive but they save lives and help you prevent a manslaughter charge and a lifetime of remorse.

This is a bit extreme, but true.

Safety measures are so important. They're like your insurance policy. Expensive until you find you need it, then, it's a great bargain.

Good Luck, L.M.

I don't know anything about toad brakes, but I'm going to add them. Do you recommend any brand for the YJ? Thanks.
