Under hood storage

I don't remember where I read about this but I figured I'd share an option for under hood storage. I took a 50 Cal ammo can and mounted it where the a/c compressor would be, if I had a/c. In order to not crowd the engine and accessories I drilled two 3/8 holes down the center rib of the can. They are approximately 3 3/8" apart.

Note-- Don't get in a hurry and drill the second hole 5" away from the first. If you repeat my mistake, you will need a third bolt, fender washer and neoprene washer plus a lock nuts.

Items needed are: ammo can, two each of 8mm bolts, fender washer and neoprene washer.

I drove about 100 miles this weekend with the can empty as a test. No issues. It will hold a fair amount of tools for every day carry.

Good write up & info.
There was someone on here that used a Pvc tube & threaded pvc caps at both ends then just mounted it on the orig tool rack.

Tools? You could make Lasagna in there and it would be cooked by the time you got to work. LOL

Off topic, but we wire tied our MRE's to the engine to heat them up during Desert Storm. LOL

I'm going to throw some wrenches in there and drive around for awhile and see how hot they get. May end up being fluid storage.

I'd put some popcorn kernels in there and head on out to the drive-in movie.

People would be sayin, "Damn, He's good looking and smart."

Just think outside the box.
It is an ammo can. (For Gods sake, no ammo!)

I thought of mounting a small 7.62 ammo can to mine years ago and using it to store a tow strap. My jeep don't leak fluids so i don't need that and i don't want to listen to metal clank around in it. You could also throw a winch remote in it it wouldn't make any noise and it would stay dry. I still kind of want to do it but i also thought of mounting a ARB or Viair compressor there.

I'm thinkin that If I was gonna put a compressor there it would be belt driven and either keep me cool or move a LOT of air.

Al, you might wanna consider a peice of angle on the side to tie into the other two bolt holes.
Just a thought.

It will likely range 150-200 degrees in that box in the summer.... cooler in the winter.

@Gottagofast
The original thought was to drill four holes and use all the bracket holes. However, it crowded into everything. Good idea on the angle.iron side brace.

You might be on to something.

To OP: The next time you go out on a jeep run you should fill the box with convenience store burritos after breakfast and see if they are the perfect temperature at lunch time.

I just suddenly got hungry and got indigestion at the same time....

Also just had a cool (warm) thought to go w mr bills....

What if you made a coil of 5/8 copper tubing to go through that box n tied it into a heater hose....

You could put about anything in there to cook.

I'm sensing some sarcasm. That's okay, I like sarcasm. More than a few people think that I am sarcastic a$$. This idea may turn out to be a dud. Once I'm able to get a decent length drive where I can get to temp and sustain it for awhile then I'll know how hot the tools will get. Edison didn't invent the light bulb on his first try.

Nope... I'm dead serious.... underhood cooking is awesome on the trail

Personally I wouldnt keep tools there because I wouldn't want them to be hot if I wanted to use em but if ur willing to snag em out and wait for em to cool down there's no reason at all it wouldn't work out just fine

Good space utilization idea but limited for storing items that won't be affected by the high under the hood temps. Some things like straps or jumper cables might be damaged in the high oven temps...LOL

I don't think anyone's being sarcastic, Just pokin' good natured fun.

When I saw Gottagofasts' idea of copper tube coil, I thought 'Put a mash tub in place of the jack and a drip can bolted to the side of the block and have a celebration at the end of the day".
Might have to work out a few details, but Edison had to start somewhere.

If we all did our part we could have lasagna, popcorn and whisky when we got back to the trailhead. Who knows what recipes we'd come up with.
I like green chili. Maybe someone else could rig up a rice cooker.
It's close to lunchtime. I'm making myself hungry.

Good Luck, L.M.

I do love lasagna, so it may become a food warmer or possibly fluid storage. The jack and handle are never hot but they aren't bolted to the engine. If the wrenches are too hot to handle, I may need to keep some gloves handy. LOL.

The motivation for this was where to store some tools that some idiot couldn't just grab and go. The tools were previously in a plastic ammo can designed for shotgun shells and slid under the driver's seat.

In the end, it be a fool's errand but if you don't try, you never accomplish anything.

This thread has reminded me of an engineering professor I knew 45 years ago who fabricated a sheetmetal box for an onboard oven in his VW van, heated by the exhaust manifold. He had a long commute and was able to have his dinner cooked and ready to eat when he arrived home.

The local newspaper wrote a story about him and some of his "crazy inventions," but they paled in comparison with a former girlfriend's Uncle Louie (known by the family as "Screwy Louie"), whose 1947 Cadillac is still famous for having all the conveniences of home and on display in a museum in San Diego:

I like the idea and would act on it also if I didn't have AC. Personally I don't see it getting that warm there but if it did should be easy enough to put a heat buffer there but it want hurt a few hand tools to get warm. You may need to throw some shop rags in to keep it from making noise on the trail. I just added one of the tuffy hood locks to my hood to keep someone out so may be another thought for you if you don't already have one.

Fwiw my temp estimate is based on 90-100* heat

Should be way gooder'er in 70* weather

I used to have a pipe like Louie has on his dash, but the cops confiscated it in the raid.

Or you could go the opposite way...I had an '04 Cobra and a shop in Alabama, Running with the Devil, built a system that turned the AC into a cooling system for the supercharger. Heat soak would steal a lot of HP at the track and we would have big liquid intercooler boxes that we would fill with ice etc in between runs to get the temps down.

Keep your beers cold...

So I figured all this shenanigans about it getting too hot I put it to the test. I used a 7.62mm ammo can so smaller. Driver around for 30 mins and then hit some trails. Hit two trails messed around hit mud and climbed some down trees, and drove on the highway home. Stopped at publix on way
home and opened it up. Box was luke warm on the outside and tools were wrapped with shop towels to not bounce around and were not hot at all. Thanks for the idea I love it and perfect for little stuff

Eight months later and all is well. The tools are barely warm, easy to handle. An oven may be forthcoming though.
