Vin locations.

Can anyone tell me where the Vin locations are on a 1992 wrangler YJ. I know there's the one by the windshield and one in the engine bay drivers side is there any others located on the jeep Tub. Is there any on the frame.

Jeep originally put a paper label on the drivers side hinge pillar. Most of them are gone by now. There should be a second metal tag on the firewall near the battery.

As far as I know there isn't a complete VIN on the frame. There could be a partial on the rear X-member.

We sometimes hear about a "hidden" VIN. As a bodyman, I don't ever remember seeing any and I have replaced many frames during my career. Almost all cars and some light trucks are unibody now. Jeeps and real trucks are still body on frame.
If anyone knows where there is another or "hidden" VIN, please post.

If you are concerned about an altered or replaced VIN, one dead giveaway is the rivets holding the VIN tag on the dash. They are originally secured by a rosette rivet. If the VIN tag doesn't have a pair of rosette rivets, it has been changed. There are ways around the rivet, but I don't plan on revealing how.

Good Luck, L.M.

Reason I'm asking is I'm looking at buying another YJ tube in good condition but the vin plate on the drivers side is gone. so was wondering if there was another I could look for.

I know they sell replacement jeep tubs how does that work with the vin plates.

That's all local state laws there buddy so you'd need to contact your local DMV. There was one stamped vin on my tub by the battery tray on my jeep. I may or may not know a guy who cut the plate with the vin on it and graft it to another tub without you ever being able to tell the difference. I do know there are some custom vehicle rules you can talk to the dmv about like my dad built his own frame and installed an old 50's car body on it and was able to get a vin and it registered through the dmv.

Not all YJs have the battery side VIN tag. May be the same with the one on the drivers side, but the 92 should have the one on the drivers side above the PCM and on the dash in the common spot. There should also be one(paper) on the drivers door if that is still there.
The number on the crossmember above the fuel tank is just the production sequence(serial)number, not the entire VIN.

There is a vin tag also connected to the front side base of the grille, at least on my 95.
