Warning Light

Hey folks, I hope someone can help me! I have a 1995 YJ and after driving it for about 10 minutes, the Check Engine Light comes on. I have checked all of the fluid levels etc, and if I pull over and turn off the engine and immediately re-start it, the light goes off! But, if I continue driving, the light comes back on! I'm perplexed! Lol! I have disconnected the battery leads to see if that stops it, but it doesn't. I also took it to Autozone for a diagnostic test, but they said their "tester" only diagnoses engines from 2000 onwards. Any idea's BEFORE I take it to a Jeep dealership? Any suggestions? Thanks everyone!

Those are OBD II scanners, YJs don't have that system. Do the "key trick" to get codes, Google it. Codes below... My 95 manual in my signature has a more complete list that describes what will trigger the CEL in the "Fuel Systems" section.

Key trick- turn the key to the ON position, then off, on, off, on, off, on. Count the times the light flashes. For example; flash, pause, flash, pause, flash, long pause (about twice the normal time) flash, pause, flash, pause, flash would be code 33 for three flashes a long pause, and then three more. The codes are all two digits long, the pause between codes will be about three times as long as the pause between single flashes.

My 95 did the same thing. 3 days later my 4HI stopped working. Just a vacuum hose with a hole in it. Might be that simple in your case too.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the 4HI?

Four wheel drive in the HI position in your transfer case. Look at the knob, it should be marked.

You also have four wheel drive in the LO position plus 2 wheel drive and neutral. Total of four positions for the transfer case shifter.

Good Luck, L.M.
