Well, I did something stupid...

I bought a YJ.

Oh, the stupid part? I haven't seen it in person yet. What I know or have been told (so far):

1995 YJ S (base) model
Automatic
4.0 I6
153K miles
"Minimal surface rust. Frame excellent."

Supposedly runs 'great', drives 'great' and everything works (including the A/C)

It is being shipped to me and should be in my driveway next Wednesday. This is either going to turn out to be awesome...or a painful lesson. I'm both excited and somewhat terrified. However, the deal was good assuming the YJ is at least mostly as described.

My major concern is that the frame will be rotted out. It is coming from New Jersey. The owner swears that is not the case though. We'll see...

Stay tuned to this thread as you find out my fate. This will either end with "Everything is awesome--tune up and mod time!" or "I need a frame...."

Wish me luck.

Quite possibly. However, I perhaps made it sound a bit worse than it is. I haven't fully paid for it yet. The owner is also the shipper and is bringing it to me himself on agreement that I will pay for it when he delivers it and all is as described.

You are insane my friend. I hope it all works out for you. I also hope that it's comes with a seat able to accommodate your massive balls because I don't know anyone who would buy a rusted jeep site unseen. Buyers don't want to say the bad stuff. They only reason he is telling about surface rust is probably because he can't hide it.. meaning it's gonna be worst that "a little". Check the windshield frame, under fenders, and under foot wells. Hinges are a big one too but more obvious. That sag also looks significant ahah. At least it drives

I'm really only hoping to get a little "fun time" out of it this summer and then start working on a rather thorough restoration (as needed) and upgrades over the winter. To be honest, if the frame is solid and the engine isn't blown I'll be happy. Otherwise, I'll be seriously renegotiating with the seller.

Oh, the stupid part?

Agreed!

Hope it works out. It almost looks like red overspray under the hood.

Interested to see how this turns out.
It does look like it's had a DuPont overhaul. Otherwise, it appears to be rather unmolested.
Good luck with it.
Mine was originally sold in New Jersey and has very little frame rust.

I am excited for you. I figure if the guy is willing to bring it out himself it can't be the end of the world. Any jeep that is 20+ years old will need some work and it sounds like you are willing to do that work. Good luck and my fingers are crossed for you.

The front end of that Jeep has 100% for sure been repainted. There is red overspray all over the engine compartment and hood latch.

Good luck. Hope it works out.

If the price is right, its worth the gamble, especially if you plan to rework it in the future anyways.
I once sent out a check for $20,000, 4 states away for an Excursion after only seeing pictures. Everything worked out good in my case. In fact I found several oil change receipts from the original owners and was able to contact them to get the trucks history and usage story. I bought it through a wholesaler on ebay, and what the original owner was given as a trade in vs what I paid was only a $1,500 difference. Between the dealer, wholesaler, and ebay, nobody really made any significant money on it.

Why is the rear passenger side sitting so much lower than the rear driver side? Look at the space between the fender flare and the tire. There is a difference, I just don't know why.

I wish you luck, but man, I would have been much more cautious.

Passenger fender looks tweaked front the front.

Don't get too worried. It sounds like you limited your risk by not paying for it in advance. I've bought several Jeeps online over the years and only had one that I wished I'd have avoided....and that still turned out ok. My advice is stick to your agreement and if you don't like the Jeep when it arrives - don't feel like you "have to" buy the Jeep in order to be a nice guy. Best of luck and keep us posted.

I completely agree with Dunlap' advice.
If you're not 100% satisfied tell him no. If you don't you'll regret it.
You know any mechanics that would be willing to look at it with you when it arrives?

I will send you a cashiers check for the purchase price of your item plus $500.00. Simply deposit the cashiers check and forward the $500.00 to my agent. He will then come by your place and pick up the item.

That's one scam. Once you send the $500.00 off and the fake "Cashiers Check" bounces. you won't ever be able to contact the purchaser again.

Another scam is advertising some item like an Airstream trailer for half of what it's worth. Naturally the item being advertised is in another state, but they will deliver it. Once you send a $1000.00 "deposit" to cover shipping, they will deliver the trailer to you and collect the balance. They know how to make the deal seem too good to pass up. Usually a military person being sent overseas. Once you send the "deposit", you never hear from them again.
I hope this isn't your situation.

There are 42 YJs for sale in and around Nashville that are listed on Craigslist. You didn't need to go out of state.

The headline for your original post is "Well, I did something stupid...". I agree.
Hopefully the "deposit" wasn't a lot of money.

Did the Jeep arrive? You should have received it yesterday, Wednesday April 26.

Good Luck, L.M.

Finally get a chance to follow up on this one. Been a busy week.

Good news/bad news result.

Good news: I got the YJ!
Bad news: It was (as always) not *quite* as described by the seller.

Went through the usual inspection. Start/run, weird noises, leaks, basic function checks, rust check, etc.

Issues:

Frame has some rust issues. No holes found, but it's going to need some TLC to survive long-term. This was my biggest issue.

Tub is generally clean. Tailgate is rusted out along the bottom, rear corners have some seemingly minor rust issues.
Front floorboards? Pretty badly rusted out. No holes through them yet, but that appears to be about ready to happen.
Windshield frame appears to have rust along the top. I need to assess that one further. Just haven't gotten to it.

Random squeaking while engine is running - Who knows..Belt tensioner, water pump? Not sure yet. Need to track that down.

Exhaust leak - Cracked manifold maybe? Couldn't find it visually on a quick check, but it's certainly louder than it should be.

4WD shifter is occasionally very difficult to shift. Hopefully something simple. However, all 4WD modes work. This one is mildly concerning, but probably an easy fix.

Auto trans - Shifts through all gears smoothly. No issues I could find.

Now, I was able to leverage these issues (in particular the rust issues) as a bargaining point. Got this one for $1,500 delivered. The seller really did not want to drag it 700 miles back home.

Quite a bit of work needed on this one, but I think I ended up with a fair deal price-wise compared to local offerings.

I was born and raised in Jersey, no such think as a 20 + year old car with minor rust. On the bright side $1500.00 would not even buy a Wrangler for parts where I currently live. Sounds like you did all right.

That was kind of my thought. If things are "too bad" once I get into it I can part it out and make back the purchase price.

I'm happy all of us negative butts were wrong.

It seems that for the price you got a great deal. For $1500.00 you can easily get your money back and a good profit if you decide to part it out.
Around here the hard top and doors will bring a Grand.

Good Luck, L.M.

For $1500 it sounds like the seller was the one taken. He must have been desperate to get rid of it. I'm glad it worked out for you.

Just to finish off this thread.

I sold off this YJ for a profit and purchased another one. It's an 89 and a "downgrade" in the sense that it is a 2.5 instead of a 4.0, but it is super clean. The only rust I can find is a little on the tailgate hinge area and a bit on the windshield frame. It's one of the cleanest YJs from a rust perspective I've seen around here.

I'll start another thread with the details on that one.
