What can I do with my Jeep?

My dad just gave me his 1999 Jeep Wrangler.

The good: Its a manual, has about 98k on it, and has bigger wheels/tires already. It was also free!

The bad: In desperate need of a new roof. The stereo is also seriously way too rigged for my taste... all factory speakers blown, just running off of a Walmart head unit and a cheap speaker on the back seat.

The ugly: Its a 4cyl, sucks more gas than my F150, and drives like it has 10hp!

How can I make myself happy with this thing?

How happy do you want to spend?

First, welcome to the forum. Second, look around the forum, there is tons of mods that can be done to your Jeep to make it awesome. First of all, take it off road and have some fun.

I'm not sure where to off road. I've never done it... unless you count ripping through a corn field. I live in Flemington, NJ. Can my 4cyl handle off road?

A few grand, really. Not all at once, but over a period of a 3-4 months. Basically by summer, I want to have a great time with it.

I think I am going to get the overhead speakers that mount to my roll cage, a replacement top next, and then I'm open to suggestions.

How can I get more power? More gas mileage? It sucks to get 12MPG AND only have like 100hp. If I got 30MPG I wouldn't be complaining. If I had 300hp but got 12MPG I wouldn't be complaining, either.

Engine swap is the easiest and most thrust per squeeze for getting a reasonable power increase.
The 4 banger is actually pretty good off road unless you do a lot in soft sand or mud bogging.

What would be the easiest swap? I am guessing switching to the straight 6?

Btw, if your Jeep is a 99 it is TJ and not a YJ. You either have a typo or you are in the wrong sub-forum.

best bet is to sell it to a girl and get a 6 because swapping is just a waste of money and the 4 isnt really worth putting money into.
