Fixed a rattling spare tire carrier latch that finally drove me insane enough to make up a fix. Reconditioned and charged up the battery too. I also noticed that I have all kinds of space on my battery tray, so I'll be putting a bigger AGM battery in some time this year.

I was going to do the 20 gallon fuel tank mod, but didn't get to it. I also scoped out a different place to mount my O/R lights. Will drill the holes and get them moved as soon as I get the chance.

Sorry, I don't have a picture, so I'll have to try to explain with words.

First I had to isolate the cause of the rattle. It was in the latch. The latch handle goes all the way through (or is supposed to) a bracket attached to the swing-away carrier. Nothing wrong with the "handle" side, but the "back" side is where the trouble is. There is a screw that holds the locking pin in place. Instead of that screw having some way to pull the handle tight into the bracket, it sort of just floats there (it's supposed to fit all the way through the bracket and rest in the hole in the back for support, but it's milimeters too short for some reason). It is that way because there is a bump-stop attached to the bumper that has a rubber pad on it. So if that screw sticks out too far, it won't press far enough into the bump-stop to allow the pin to be rotated down to lock the carrier in place.

Anyway, I found a longer screw with the same threads and put on a washer so the whole assembly could pull against something (the back of the bracket) and be tight. I had to fiddle with it quite a bit to get it to work right, and the screw will eventually loosen up because of the interaction between the handle, the screw, and the washer. But for now it's not rattling, and thus I can isolate other potential problems and not lose my mind.

Again, I'm sorry, a picture or two would make it a lot easier to understand. I hope that helps though.

I'm not really sure. I was looking around to see if I could just get a new latch for it (pretty casually though) and didn't really find one that matched what I have. I also thought of removing the existing latch and getting something completely different, but I couldn't find anything quite right. When I bought the Jeep, they said the carrier was custom-built for the PO, but I'm pretty sure that was BS.

It seems pretty solidly built, but some of the details are lacking. Like the pivot point; it leaks grease pretty bad, and the fit isn't quite right. And then this fitment problem with the latch. It all functions fine, but it's just a little shoddy, and that drives me crazy.

My next problem with it is that the bumper was welded directly to the frame, so I think I'm going to have some serious problems if I ever want to get something different. I don't weld, so I don't really know how bad it is, but my brother does, so I'll just ask him to take a look.

ETA: I was just re-reading my original post, and now I'm wondering if the bracket on the carrier was installed upside down? I'm going to have to look at that when I get home...

my bumper

Camper Bob,
My friend who is a master wielder made my bumper and tire carrier. It has never rattled! If you look closely at it you can see the stud he wielded to the bumper and the handle like cross bar that swings onto it. I can tighten that sucker as tight as I can and it will never rattle. It is the most solid bumper/tire carrier I've ever seen. I still owe him a weeks labor for his efforts.

Ordered a new battery box for my Jeep, Going to install a 2 gallon air tank below it, and plumb it into my ARB compressor, mount my battery in the new box, and start looking for a second Optima and a GOOD isolator kit...

Trail Ready Happy Hulk for 2018

I don't do my own work but I have a great local mechanic who took my Jeep on as a Winter project and finally got the front end figured out and repaired.

It's a custom build with axles from a 1980 wagoneer. For several years the tie rod ends have needed replacing but until now, no one took the time to figure out what the right parts were. So, my guy did U/L ball joints and all new tie-rod ends. He also did a frame repair for me last summer after a particularly nasty jolt on a trail in Utah snapped the frame ahead of the driver's suspension mount. All I need now is alignment. They couldn't do that before because of the looseness of the steering parts.

The wind picked up my hardtop the day before I was going to put it back on...smashed the real window out. I think I'm going to stick with the soft top from now on rather than get a new window or a new top.

I took my son out to the deer lease last weekend. While I was gone, wifey drove the Heapster. Half way to work she got a CEL. She turned it around and drove it home. So now I have that to work on...

Hopefully it's something simple...

Walk by it every day. I look longingly at it, it looks longingly at me. I tell it "soon ..." One day soon I'll find an excuse to get it out of the garage on an errand!

I have a Battery Doctor isolator. I've had it for well over a year and so far, not a bit of a problem. Just install it and forget it.
Mine is a 100A. model which is just fine for my 76A. alternator. If I installed a 125A. or larger alternator, I'd have to get the next larger Battery doctor isolator.

Some guys like something more mechanical that you have to get under the hood to turn the switch to charge one battery or the other. I can't be bothered.
The Battery Doctor keeps my winch battery fully charged and I don't have to pay attention to when I last switched the battery to be charged.

Good Luck, L.M.

Picked it up from the shop. Had them install a TrueTrac in the 8.8 and swap the flange for a yoke to regain some slip yoke travel.

...and now I can't seem to edit my signature in the "About Me" section of the user control panel. :/

Edit: Got it!

Moved the off road lights to a much more stable location on the bumper. Now they will stay tight and not wobble so much.

Went to test them out and they didn't work!!

Blew a fuse and fried the switch trying to figure out where I went wrong! So I decided f#!K it, I'll just replace the harness with a proper one and wire it up right instead of dealing with PO's crappy crap.

New Spare Tire Cover

The Happy Hulk Jeep ('94 YJ) is going through a transformation. Having just gotten it mechanically sound again, the decision about whether or not to replace the smashed rear hatch on the hardtop was next on the list. I decided to ditch the hard top and I bought a new Bestop Supertop. I have a brand new Bestop top that came with the Jeep but when I took it out of the box I realized it would only work with the half-doors. I have them, but I hate them. So, I'm going with a new soft top and soft doors.

Since all this work and a new top means we'll be spending more time in the Jeep this year, I also bought new seats. Smittybilt XRC supspension seats.

I have a dual battery mount that is still waiting for installation....I got it 3 years ago but with all the mechanical problems I've had to deal with the battery shelf wasn't a high priority. Meanwhile....my tractor LOVES the Jeep's spare battery.

haha.

Last weekend I put a new fuel pump in and swapped some relays chasing a misfire issue. Last night I swapped thermostat, broke a thermostat housing, and replaced said thermostat housing. Oh also swapped out upper radiator hose.

Pulled off the flares, steps, hood latches, wipers, etc from the exterior to prep for body work and paint. There was a rust spot on the rocker about the size of a quarter, when I pulled the step off I found the rest:

Then I pulled everything but the dash and driver's seat to prep for bed lining the tub.

Went for my longest test drive today on the Houston freeways, 290 to 99 Grand Parkway to I-10 and back home, about 50 miles round trip. Hit 80 mph several times for a few minutes using GPS. 70mph was close to 2700rpm and all on flat ground. GPS showed 4mph faster than speedo. I have 30" tires and 4.10 gears. Yes ,the little 2.5L lacks power, so added a new hood and rear end decal.
Hopefully to be exploring the high desert dirt rock roads in west Texas while on vacation.

Ordered new skid plate for 15 gal. fuel tank and 3/4" over stock boomerang shackles last week. Got the skid plate today and apparently ordered the wrong one as it's 23" long and the rusted one on my YJ is 31" long. Looks like I have a 20 gal. plastic fantastic tank.Returning to Quadratec for exchange.ulling hair:

Now the 3/4" boomerang M.O.R.E. shackles installed easy enough on the the front, however the MORE kit included 8 half bushings but two different size of half bushings 4 were correct size and other four are way to big and ended up robbing the four correct size bushings for the rear shackles so now I'm short the 8 half bushings for the rear shackles and have these 8 extra large half bushings of no value to me. Will call someone Monday and bitch about it. The correct size half bushings were numbered 2002 and the extra large half bushings are numbered 2004. Anyhow 20 mile test drive in city and hi way was fine and cruised 70 to 75 on hi way in 5th.
