What is this?

Sure it's a dumb question but I wasn't able to find an answer on the forums and I don't have a Haynes manual. I have a 1995 YJ 4cyl and this thing was broken off the valve cover. It's dry rotted and I need to know how to order a replacement so I need to know what it is (lol). While you're at it, what's it for? I used some electrical tape to reattach it but that's peeling off. I'm guessing it's a vacuum line of some sort. Also I was wondering what the smaller line affixed to it is. I marked it with a red arrow too.

not sure as I haven't had a YJ for a while but looks like a breather/pcv tube? did you try google for that for your motor/year? maybe get a pic that way to confirm or deny?

They are supposed to be plastic elbows for the ccv system. If it's toward te firewall and it looks like a plastic cylinder it's an oil filter that connects to the airbox to prevent blow by. No one makes that part anymore. Hope it helps.

Heck yeah that helps. Is it something I need to worry about if it falls back off? I can't tell a difference in the idle beyond maybe a placebo effect. If it were a vacuum line there would be all kinds of idle problems but this one idled fine even when that piece fell off the valve cover.

Yeah. Mine broke a while ago. The rear is fresh air from the air box. The front is ventilation out. Wouldn't worry about it that much. Drove like that for like a year. Had oil leakage on long trips so I superglued mine.

It just recirculates oil smoke so that it doesn't pollute the atmosphere. Mine was broken too, and has black electrical tape holding it together now. Been like that for at least a year too. I want to keep everything that is broken either fixed or replaced, because they were put there for a reason in the first place.

Thanks everyone, that really helped. I think I'm gonna try a better clamp and move on.
