What kinda abuse can d30/d35's take?

I have a 98tj 4.0 5speed with dana30 front and a dana 35 rear,Im very excited to have a Jeep but I view lots of vids starring TJ's with the d35 rear and watched them snap in multiple vids, some were exterme use but most were 33" tires in mud.So I plan to go with 31" tires, possible no lift.Should I be afraid of axle breakage?I do minor offroading,No rocks for hundreds of miles,no hills either, only soft mud

31's should be okay for a long time with an open axle, no locker. Most of the time when they bust is when the weight is on one wheel and you get on the gas. Snap Snap. Best thing is, save up for either a better axle, or one of the upgrade kits and never worry again.

31's and not a lot of rocks will be fine. they will break when guys are bouncing trying to get traction also. you'll have a tough time breaking anything with what you're talking about doing.

i beat the hell out of my d35 with 32-11.50-15 and never broke a shaft. but keep in mind i had open diffs and 3.07 gears (no torque loading with gears like this) also i never ran it on rocks. unless your jumping the thing i wouldnt worry about a d35 with 31s and open diffs.

D-30s hold-up well up to a 33" tire, and they handle 35s well with chromoly shafts.
A D-35 is stressed when it leaves the factory.

It's funny really....My D35 held up fine for 6 years behind a chevy 350. I ran it with 31's for the first 4 years and 38's the last 2 years. I put my 35's on and within a week it snapped. Go figure.

I would say wheel it. If/when it breaks replace it with an 8.8. You could on the side start building an 8.8 for when the day comes. That way your not pinched for time or money, and aren't rushed to get it done and end up in doing it wrong.

I bust up a d35 once per year, with 31's open diff. But I am hard on equipment. Just ordered 33-12.50-15 inch BFG MT KM2's the other day. So I plan on upgrading to the 8.8 and selectable locker before spring. As far as the d30,never had to many problems,But I keep close eye on it to make sure it holds up until I can find a d44.
