Exclamation What motor do I have?

Hello, This is my first time posting on the forum. Recently picked up a great deal on a 1990 YJ. It was originally a 2.5 manual engine, but now it seems that somewhere along the way someone put a different engine in it.

I was wondering if there are any markings on the engine somewhere that will tell me what engine it is. I already looked at a few possibilities but have found anything online.

I'm somewhat new to Jeeps, but the engine looks to be a 4.0 with a Automatic transmission.

I will post pictures later if that helps.

Yep pictures would be mandatory.
But you could by counting spark plugs and describing layout.... ie 4 in a row, 6 on a row, 4 on each side.... etc

look on VIN-code for the original motorisation: 8th symbol E=2.5l, I-4; L=4.0, I-6 T=4.2l, I-6(the least probable, but possible for a 1990 YJ. 1990 model can be still marked AMC or Chrysler Jeep. The motor will be date coded right side on a machined surface 2.5l between no.3 and no.4 cilinder, 4,0 and 4,2l between no.2 and no.3 cilinder. For a 1990 build the first digit is 0(zero) for a 1889 it's 9. The valve covers had JEEP stamped on it, but could be changed in the years.

VIN would not tell know if the PO changed the engine.

If it's a JEEP motor, there should be a boss on the passenger side of the engine block with an alphanumeric code. Post that code and someone here should be able to tell you what you have.
On the side of the block, near the top between your alternator and distributor.
Pics will help a lot.

Thank to all the replies, I been getting home late lately so haven't gotten a picture in the daytime yet.

I did check to see abou the code on the side of the block and found 711M24.

heye Torang, I wonder is your code not 711MX24 ? It would indicate a 1987 6cil. 4.l, multipoint injection motor. If this corresponds with your VIN-code an L on 8th position
your motor is at least in a configuration O.E.M.

YJ's didn't get the 4.0 until 91 so it sounds like someone swapped a Renix 4.0 out of an XJ into it. And if so it probably has the AW4 automatic transmission too. I wonder if they clocked the transfercase properly, post some pictures!

Finally took an picture of my engine bay, let me know if you know what engine it might be. The more I play around with it, and notice things, it seems it possibly could be an engine out of a cherokee.

I also added a picture of the transfer case.

That's a Renix 4.0 from a XJ Cherokee

The transfercase is a NP231 and i guess the 87 2 is the date which means it was probbaly out of an 87 which was the first year of the Renix 4.0

Okay cool, this helps a lot so I can do some maintenance on the jeep. Its running good right now so I'd like to keep it that way lol.

Here's a picture of the jeep, I stole this thing for $1,500 and painted in with raptor liner. Came with front lockers too! Trying to get it ready for jeep beach now.

I expected the jeep to have a really tall body lift because the engine appears to be sitting really low in the engine bay. The raptor liner looks pretty good i am impressed.

Yeah its got a 4 inch SOA rusty's lift kit with the body lift.

totally correct, it's only a mode to tell if a motor is conform the original architecture, corresponding to the drivetrain, suspension. In this case, it showed an anomaly. (I'm not sure using the right english, I prefer dutch or french, pardon)
