I’ve owned this 1992 YJ Islander since July 2014 and it’s come quite a way capability-wise since I first took ownership. It’s been super reliable on the trails and has only left me “stranded” once when a Timken rear axle bearing came apart. Here’s the lowdown on the Jeep:
- 115,xxx miles
- Original 4.0
- AX15 rebuilt at 107,500 miles
- Built Ford 9” rear (details below)
- Built Wagoneer Dana 44 front (details below)
Original 4.0 with 115,xxx miles that starts fast and runs smooth. Doesn’t use oil, but has a rear main leak where I didn’t get a quality gasket. The AX15 was rebuilt at approx. 107,500 and has a Luk pro gold clutch and slave cylinder. The transmission is buttery smooth and has a perfect clutch pedal. I replaced the heater core, all belts, all hoses, new radiator, new thermostat, cleaned the injectors, and replaced the exhaust header with a stainless one in January 2017. Replaced and upgraded the steering box with a rebuilt Jeep J20 unit for much improved steering assist.
Interior & Exterior:
Grey vinyl seats — one original front and one front out of an 89 YJ and the original rear. Carpet in really good condition. Kenwood stereo with Eclipse 6x9’s, tweeters, and two Infinity 8” subs with a Rockford Fosgate 250w amp behind the rear seat. Spiderwebshade Shadecage with a Bestop grey top that has tinted windows and one rear window needing replaced. CB radio with external speaker and Wilson antenna. Body is straight with only a couple of dents in the tub. VERY little rust anywhere. Paint is scratched pretty heavily from wheeling in the woods in Arkansas and paint is missing in spots on the original fiberglass flares.
> Axle swaps — Ford 9” rear with 4.88 gears, Yukon big bearing nodular third member, Yukon Grizzly locker, 35 spline Moser shafts, billet steel 1310 yoke, disc brake conversion, RuffStuff pinion guard, anti-wrap bar, SYE, Oliver CV driveshaft, and RuffStuff leaf perches. Wagoneer D44 front with 4.88 gears, Eaton ELocker, ECGS chromo shafts, Mile Marker hubs, high steer knuckles, HD steering with 1-ton TRE’s and DOM tie rods and drag link, RuffStuff diff cover, and custom leaf perches.
> Suspension — Spring over setup with OEM (flat) Crown HD springs installed December 2018 with new poly bushings, and Bilstein 5100 shocks.
> Onboard air — York 210 brand new compressor installed January 2017 with a 2 gallon Viar tank.
> Tires & Wheels — 35x12.50x15 PitBull Rocker radials on 15x9 TrailReady HD beadlocks equipped with rapid deflate valve stems. Approx 4,000 miles on the tires and wheels.
> Cage — Factory sport cage has been braced and extra DOM tubing added on, including full windshield support, overhead, and all points tied into the frame.
> Winch & Lighting — Smittybilt XRC 8000lb winch, steel cable, cheapy LED cubes, cheapy LED reverse lights, Silverstar headlights.
> Bumpers & Tire Carrier — Unknown brand HD front bumper, Garvin rear bumper with swing out tire carrier, jerry can mount, HiLift jack, and trailer receiver.
will tell you it’s a well built rig that’s been very capable and reliable on the trails and streets. I hate to sell it, but I’ve got a new JK to play with. Again, just trying to gauge its worth so I can post it for sale locally.
