What Should I Do First?

I'm slowly saving money to start investing into my 87. Any suggestions on what I should do first. It's basically stock besides the 31 swampers on it that my brother bought me a while back. She runs a little rough so i was thinking maybe a new carb first or I don't know theres so much out there to choose from. Hoping people with experience will have some well informed suggestions. Thanks for the view!

If it drives & stops safely, my reccomendations would be (assuming 4.2/manual trans combo):

1) MC2100 carb swap. Can be done for under 90 bucks & it WAY better than stock in both mileage & performance.

2) "Nutter" computer mod & "Team Rush" ignition mod (complete w/ ignition advance curve mod) Even w/ a new coil & wires this can be done for well under 100 bucks.

3) AX-15 transmission swap. Not too difficult, but will take time to gather parts. Mine cost about 500 in parts...but I went w/ all new mounts/good clutch/slave cylinder/etc. Your stock trans + 31s + wheeling = time bomb.

If you have an auto trans, then I'd spend that cash on body armor, a winch/bumper & recovery gear if you're actually going to take it offroad much.

Ignition=

Motorcraft Distributor TFI Upgrade for the AMC 258

Carb = (scroll down)

Weber vs. Motorcraft 2100

Basically, you find one in junkyard or Ebay & rebuild it. It's WAY easy to do.

Trans Swap =

YJ Peugeot BA10 to AX15 conversion - ItsaJeep.Org Forums

If you do the trans swap yourself (& have all the tools) it could be done(the right way) for 500 bucks, maybe cheaper. Figure another 400+ for install by someone else.

Source for trans/bellhousing/tcase: Ebay, junkyard, Craigslist or local 4X4 club (where I found mine).....post a Wanted Ad.

Sweet! Thanks. Ordering the MC2100 this weekend. Trying to figure out the nutter bypass now. That should help since I still have the stock carb on. After new carb and nutter I'll do the team rush which I gotta figure that out too and then I'll start looking into the new tranny. OH and yes its the 4.2 Manual.

Where do you live?

If you replace any emission component, and you live in an emissions staty, you will NEVER pas your smog check.

BE CAREFUL and check your states laws before listening to anyone recommending you change anything that can alter an emissions device....

I personally would reccomend:

http://howellefi.com/tbi-kit-1987-91...ons-legal.html

and its emissions friendly in all 50 states.

Ok, what re you after with your Jeep? Performance on or off road?
Looks? Audio (stereo), want a CB?

comfort?

You have a hard top, and want to remove it and install a bikini top?

It all depends on what you want out of your Jeep.
