Winch cable ?

I bought a winch off my friend and it did not come with a cable. I bought a 100ft cable online but my prob is the cable at the end where it hooooks into the winch is just the end of the cable. Anyone know how to hook it to the winch? I assume it goes through one of the holes in the winch shaft. When you slide it through the hole how do you keep the cable from pulling through? A cable clamp looks a little to wide it seems like if i used one the clamp would hit on the inside and catch up. Any ideas?

According to instructions for a Warn winch cable replacement (10 seconds of Google work) there should be an 'eyelet' on one end of the cable, not just bare end, and there is a bolt that goes through that into the hole on the winch shaft. Hook that all together, other end of the cable (the bare end) would get put onto a cable end to hold the hook, and then you hook it to a tree at full extension, and use the winch only to pull your vehicle forward to tighten the cable onto the spool. Great way to take out kinks, by the way!
In looking further, some other types of winches use a 'tab' on the end, and one spot said you just push the end of the cable into the hole and bend it over...NOT what I would recommend doing...if you ever had the cable extended too far out...whooops! But what do I know-I 've never had to replace a cable yet. Do a google by the BRAND name of the winch you have and see what you can find out.

Thanks for the reply. I was wondering if they made something for the bare end of the cable because there is a hole with threads in it. They must make something for the bare end to bolt to the side.

You can use a crimp on cable connector, or you can use a monkeys fist. a MF is a connector that is used on braided cable like that to make a loop and are available and any hardware store....I just cant remember the correct name for um. But, all you have to do is put that over the end and tighten it down....it won't let it get back through the hole.
