Winch Question

Is a 6000 lb Vortex winch adequate for a YJ?

The general population of winch users will recommend having a winch with enough power to equal 2X the vehicle weight. Thus being said:

The stock curb weight for YJ's

4-Cylinder's: 1316 kg / 2902 lbs
6-Cylinder's: 1373 kg / 3028 lbs

And keep in mind that any modifications usually make the vehicle heavier

No, a 6000 lbs winch probably won't work. You need at least an 8000 lbs winch. Just because it is heavier than the Jeep; you also have to factor in the suction of mud & other obsticales you may be stuck in. Leave the 6000 lbs winch on the trailer & get a good 8000 lbs winch.

agreed, when you add in the resistance of big tires along with the stopping power of mud up to the floor boards you will certainly need more than a 6000lb winch.

And dont skimp on a nice winch. You can get an 8,000 pound Warn for cheap. Theres two companies I will always trust for jeep accessories no matter what and thats;

1)Warn
2)Bestop

Now, Geoff wheres my advertisers discount

also a winch's rating is baised off the first strand of line on the spool so if its 6klb thats with all the winchline pulled out then its less as the line builds up a snach block works good for this but shortens the cable by half so
