wondering 88

Has anyone actually cured this problem. My alignment is perfect. I have repace all steering components in front including stabilizer shock. New shocks, front and rear. I have a 2 1/2 lift. Some forums say drop pitman arm is a must,while others say not needed on small lift. I have stock arm. Some say remove trac bar and some say to have adjustable track bar. Mine are now gone. Didn't cure my problem when I removed. Do I have to reinstall with adjustment? Have tried with and without sway bar hooked. I have torqued my nut on my pitman arm. Also added a washer just to make sure arm was tight. Can you have a lift on a YJ and have it drive stock?

The lift was on it when I bought it and I am running 32 inch BFG's

I've seen it where the pitman arm mashed the splines on the power steering pump shaft and even torqued down it would rock back and forth before moving the drag link.

Just to check it, have someone turn the wheel back and forth a little bit with the key on. Your pitman arm should not tip or slip on that shaft. If it rocks on the shaft, there is your play in the steering.

Have checked to make sure no play in pitman arm. It is nice and tight and has no play from right to left when turning

i have a 4.5 inch lift on my 88 and it doesnt wander. i have a little bit of bumpsteer but i dont have a drop pitman arm and im pretty sure thats why. its not enough to really worry about though. my girlfriend drives it to school sometimes and its not even enough for her to complain about. are your spring and shackle bushings in good shape? my buddies cj was wandering bad and thats what his problem was.

good checking... no, don't have any probs with the 4" lift at all. Except when my pitman arm was loose on the splines and I had to add washers and torque it down again.

Have you jacked it up and pushed/pulled each wheel to ensure its not sloppy at the wheel? Try to move it in all directions and ensure there isn't any play anywhere. Something, somewhere has got to have some slop in it.

Have jacked jeep up and checked for wheel play. All seems tight. Other than visual how do you check spring bushings?

i dont know man, his were obviosly shot. when i looked at the front shackles one was leaned to the outside and you could see the rubber mashed on one side and loose on the other. if it still has rubber bushings i would just change them out it tightened mine up a lot going to poly bushings.

Had a wondering problem with my 98 TJ. Not sure if every jeep is like this but mine has lots of grease fittings on the front end. everywhere EXCEPT the bottom ball joints. I had to take it in to have new u joints put on the wheels and the tech found that the bottom ball joints were dry and rusted almost tight. He freed them up and got lub in there and guess what. NO MORE WONDERING . It seems that with the dry joints when you let go of the steering wheel the front wheels don't return to straight so you are constantly turning back and forth to keep it going straight. (wondering ) Give it a try.............Dave

jakec I think you are on to something. Checked mine tonight and front spring on the back mount has all rubber gone on one side and spring is tight against the mount. Back spring on the same side has a 1/2 gap from spring to the mount. No rubber at all. Now any suggestions on bushings other than poly?

oh ok good. i use energy suspension bushings and have been happy with them. thats just what the speed shop i go to suggested so i went with that. i havent tried any other brands. if i do it again i will get the greasable kind though so i dont have to keep taking them off and greasing them to get rid of the sqeaking. i think i spelled that wrong but whatever.

also, my buddy owns a 4x4 shop and he said that what he learned over the years, owning and lifting vehicles, is that you have to adjust the caster when you lift. some alignment places don't know that so its good to go to a shop with 4x4 experience when you get an alignment. he said its especially prevalent on jeeps. its not a lot of adjustment but, you do have to do it

Will go with greeseable. Alot easier to maintain. Also have checked my caster and from what I checked I believe I still have good positive caster.

i have a 93 yj 4 inch lift and lift shackles. all over the road when i bought it. replaced all shackle bushings and track arm bushings..they were shot. replaced shocks and acouple worn tie rod ends. had it aligned. much better but still a little wandering. found out about caster and how a positivecaster will retun your steering wheel straight. so i removed he lit shackles redrilled holes to shorn the shackle lift.. 100% percent improvement. not perfect but definetly beter. wife sys leave it alone it drives great?????
