YJ with a V8 how much should I pay?

So here's my situation. Someone has a very clean 93 YJ with a Chevy V8 (that engine and trans has about 90k on it) dropped in it. They want to trade or sell. I have a 1998 TJ 4.0 that's lifted, rebuilt tranny and new head and 180k on the odometer but far less, maybe 14k on the tranny and just slightly more maybe 18k on the new head.

Would this be an 'even trade'? In his favor, mine?

I think it depends on the condition of both wranglers? Rust, leaking, wiring, body's.

Definitely in your favor.

Any original Jeep is worth more than a something someone butchered.

That said why?

lifted TJ with a rebuilt tranny and head.... of course they want to trade.

I would agree with the two other replies. I am not a fan of engine swaps. Sure, they may have done a great job and you have all of the functionality of an unmolested Jeep, but did they follow through with everything else? What about the transfer case? Another question is if the stock axles are up to the added torque from a V-8.

I think that you are way ahead - providing both Jeeps are in equal condition otherwise.

I have a video of the YJ and it looks very clean, and pictures of engine look good. My TJ is overall in good shape for age, just minor rusting under floor boards up front but nothing underneath etc..

Why do you want to trade? Looks like you have a nicer Jeep

Well my daily driver is a JKU, my other car besides the TJ is a corvette. The YJ w a V8 seems like an in between option of off road and speed I guess.

TJs are newer, also run on springs. 4.0L has enough power. the V8 is tempting of course, but as far as i know, drive-train is a big concern.

i would not trade. i would try and do an engine swap eventually on my YJ, but as far as buying already swapped it's a big no no.

take a hammer and tap the frame on that YJ. If it is solid ask for $5K and trade away. Yours is definitely worth $5K more.

It seems like your TJ is in much better condition (original, practical, maintenance, equipment). I would keep the TJ.

I appreciate all the feedback. I thought I was on a more of a 1:1 swap. It seems the YJ w a V8 is not quite as valuable as I thought it was.

Was told by seller of YJ:

Drive shaft was built with chevy on one end and jeep on the other

And

I still have jeep front and rear ends the drive shafts were changed to fit the chevy transfer case

This is somewhat Greek to me!

Nothing wrong with what they did.. but with a v8 you really need a bigger/stronger axles in the back as it sounds like to upgrade to the axles was done. I would keep looking.

What V8 is in it? Ian not really an engine guy, but I always thought the 4.0 wasn't too far behind a lot of smaller/older V8's.

YJ's pretty much all came with Dana 35 rear ends, which can be marginal at best in stock form if you like to get on it. I'd guess anyone who has done or is interested in an engine swap likes to get on it every once in a while.

Think future repairs. This could be problematic if you don't know the particulars of all the swaps.

I assume you don't have emissions regulations to worry about. An engine swapped vehicle in CA would be a registration nightmare for the typical driver.

And finally - major swap = molested jeep = reduced value.

It has a Vortec motor out of what looks like an Escalade 6.0L. They can be had at junk yards for $800-1200 without tranny. That is a solid motor and build to last, plenty of power and torque. I had an 02 escalade and it pulled! I think they were rated at 345HP and close to 400tq.

I thought he said it was a 5.3 or 5.7 but maybe he misquoted or I heard incorrectly.

Seller responded:

Yes it's a vortex 5.3 2005 model

Ah alright, close. Its a 5.3 out of a Tahoe or a Chevy work van then. Same price at a junk yard. Still a very good motor, police use them in their Tahoe's (02-06's).

Based on what he said, the axles are likely to be D35? I'm going to have to ask more.

I'm intrigued by the V8 but don't want a slush diff at the end of the day!
