16' JKURHR My biggest build2date by far

Finally going up on the lift tomorrow morning. I've been waiting to get a JKU and I'm going bigger than I ever have... I've talked with a lot of you and some of you even more, techs at manufacturers, reading, reading and more reading along with some friends experiences.

This is the list of major parts i'm starting with in phase one. None of them are going back so please take that into consideration when chiming in with helpful advice.

*Also, I'm going for function and looks, which means I spent a little in areas that isn't necessary and more than most need in others*

3.5" Rock Krawler X Factor mid-arm lift kit (after this is complete will measure for Adams drive shafts)
2.0 Fox Performance shocks
2.0 Fox ATS stabilizer (Can't go Hydro yet)
Steersmart top mount (no drill) drag link
Rock Krawler Pro aluminum tie rod
Spicer 4.88 gearing
RCV chromoly front axles
RCV 300m rear axles
TF ball joints
RK C Gussets (Truss's before I hit 8+ trails)
JKS Flex Connects
AEV Diff covers

All the hardware for the gear job, bump stops, including grease and brake fluid.
My Mopar big brake kit still hasn't arrived. I have to decide on the fluid for the gears after brake in is complete (leaning towards Lucas).
I have the 37 x 12.5 x 17 Nitto Ridge Grapplers
Waiting for the Fuel Zephyrs (bead lock) to arrive

I have more things that don't apply for now. I really can use any helpful advice. I'll take pics as we do the work and keep you posted as each area gets completed. Also, will let go of all the parts, wheels and tires coming off the Jeep with less than 27,000 miles.

Thanks,

Jeff B.

You have to be completely stoked about this getting underway tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing more pics as it comes together.

Sounds awesome! Any chance you can get the truss welded on before installing the ball joints? Otherwise the installer has to be careful they don't heat up the ball joints too much during welding. (I didn't personally weld my truss, but had a shop do it and they told me this would be a better route to go install the ball joints after).

I will be doing the C gussets before the ball joints go in.. The trusses I just dont have anyone in the area that im comfortable with and Im over budget already for this part of the build. The Jeep will be up north this time next year and Im very comfortable with my options there so will do the trusses soon after that...

Thank you for the keen suggestion,

Jeff B.

Round one goes to the Ney-sayers, do to a tech knockout...

Today didn't work out at all.. missing parts, arguing things I checked and double checked and when the four point lift was used as a three point lift I knew I had the wrong guy working with me. Packed everything up and decided to go in another direction (in the dark with no lights).

Back to the drawing board and I'm at a loss. I may actually have to bring my Jeep to a shop.smh I've called a few places and asked what they would charge me to come in and work on it with their techs.?. Two said, nope can't insurance and two havent got back to me. One shop did say as long as I have everything I need to complete the work, they will charge me $2300 for everything. That's not a bad price at all considering what I lose taking a few days off from work and that I was paying the last guy to work with me. I really want to do the work myself, but i'm in over my head.

Anyone know some good Jeep guys in SW Florida (Fort Myers - Sarasota)? I've only been down here a couple years and have no Jeep/Mechanical relationships. I never had this issue up north.

The C's get you the vast majority of the benefit anyway. Even though they may seem "intuitive", there is some controversy over whether sleeves and trusses do anything at all but lighten your wallet.

While that completely sucks, but you did the right thing by packing up and getting out.

I'm going to reach to a Jeeper I met at EJS this year who was out of Florida. He had an amazing build, and spoke highly of the shop he worked with. Let me see what he says. Hopefully someone else in your area can help with a recommend.

Hi Jeff, glad to try and help!

I have a contact for you. I saw the build quality of Jeep built by this shop while at EJS this year, and it was superb. I don't know if it's too far to travel for you, but you could at least have it as a back up.

That sucks I was looking forward to your build but I get it, having someone you trust work on your Jeep is priceless.

I'll bounce a call off him tomorrow. He is a ways, but I've traveled much farther for much less. I came up with a couple names down here as well, if nothing else he might be able to give me a recommendation.

Yes, those winters up in Ill. must be brutal on any rig. I'll do my best to keep the underneath clean after runs and away from as much salt as possible until all hell breaks loose then run her the way she was built to run.

She'll get built.. problems always come up. If you go back to 2014 threads you'll see I had plenty then.. heck the total build took me on and off 8-9 months. The only thing I didn't get my hands on then was the gear job. So obviously that will be my biggest disappointment (if I miss it). The rest I've done or will do again. Besides, there is plenty to do solo or with others over the next couple phases.

Good luck, Jeff. Would love to lend a hand, but a bit of a drive from Illinois! As you know, it's the journey that's half the fun. Well, at least when you look back on it...not necessarily when you are in the midst of it all. Can't wait to see it all built up!

Round two...

Round two... A little (lol) update for this thread regarding Alter Ego;

As you know it didn't workout with the first guy.. a pt/new friendish that I was going to pay to do the work with me. He's a retired Chrysler guy that self-admitted knows little about Jeep customization and nothing about JKU's. After the first couple of hours I knew the build was not going to get done right if we proceeded. So I cut my losses. I called a few places and finally decided on a guy that was recommended by Buildit (we'll talk more about him next weekend if he chooses to be mentioned here in the forum).

The guy impressed me, I mean impressed me more than any one person has ever impressed me with Jeep knowledge and understanding. He is a builder and artist.

One catch. No one works in the shop with him, but his crew.

This is a real problem for me. This is my Jeep. I've never let a Jeep out of my sight for more then 6 hours and have always been a party in the building (except the gear job on my last TJ). So, I did what any self-respecting Jeep owner would do.. I bribed him to let me work on my own Jeep with him at his shop. I told him I would pay him good money to allow me in.. he never even asked how much, "NO" was his answer. He doesn't do that, never has and never will. Wont install crap parts.. wont do crap work.. if you have a bad design he wont do it because ultimately its his reputation on the line (very respectable).

Now I'm wondering what its going to cost to have all this work done at a custom shop? Gears front and back, trusses front and back and new drive shafts.. so he can do a quality test drive. Did I mention, good guy (disclaimer: I haven't seen the final results. I handed this guy 40k in Jeep/parts without a signed contract, because I felt so confident in his character(stupid, maybe, were both hand shake guys)) he's not charging me anymore then I was paying the guy I walked away from.. he's adding on for the welding and drive shafts. He said, "I have to take that apart anyway during the gear job so I can put that on when I put it back together." My wallet said alleluia, my ego said, heck no.. My Jeep. Well, the JKU has a big back seat. I'm already 15k over budget on phase one.. My ego can use the back seat on this one and ride it out. It's not everyday that you find this caliber of builder at the pricing were talking about.. I just read a thread where a guy was quoted $3500 for a gear job. Besides I have so much more to do to this Jeep, it's going to take me a year (or two) to get done and it will have my DNA all over it.. Done deal!

I pick it up next Saturday and will have a summery posted by End of Sunday.

Done deal!

I'm glad you found someone you trust. Was this the shop Dr. Hank recommended? Looking forward to hearing more soon!

I understand the hesitation about being told you cannot be a part of the build, I feel the same as you do. I love learning new things, and if I can hang out, observe and learn, I'm stoked. Maybe ask him to at least snap some pics along the way for you?

Up in New Port Richey, yes. That round two was twice as long and I realized no one would read it.. so I cut it in half.. Some of the Jeep/machines this guy has are impressive. Built in his shop by his hands (custom). We're not talking fancy looks, we're talking capable. I've never put a shop decal on my rigs. I already took three of his... He said he would infact snap some pics

Excellent! That recommend came after I saw the build quality of Dr. Hanks Jeep("Build It So You Can Get Home") at EJS. I knew I was looking at something special, and this shop had skills.

Looking forward to seeing more!!!

Very excited about these results. I live in Lakeland FL and looking for anyone that knows what they're doing around here is impossible. I am very close to doing my own gear change in both axles and truss'ing myself. I have a welder that I haven't used in a long time and only used it a few times. Please share anything you can about this shop

Another day and another dollar...

A day of welding produced some nice gussets and truss work. Never thought I'd ever had a rig with trusses...
