2014 JKU Build - BLACKDRAFT

Hello ladies and gentlemen. My Jeep journey started just over a month ago, I traded in my 2012 Ford Fusion for a 2014 JKU Sport. I've wanted a Jeep for a long time and it's the best decision I've made.

First mod (if you can call it that, I do) was an American Tactical Thin Red Line grill insert from Dirty Acres.

Next up was to improve upon the stock bumpers. I went with the Barricade Trail Force HD front bumper with LED's as well as the Trail Force HD rear bumper with tire carrier. I plan to get bigger tires when I lift it down the road so might as well take care of handling that extra weight of the spare now.

Next up (hopefully this weekend) is a set of Morimoto Sealed 7's purchased from forum member Adamo99.

Then I plan on doing a 3.25 inch Rough Country lift and 35" tires. The dealer put Rubicon wheels and tires on it for me when I bought it so doing the 3.25 as opposed to the 3.5 allows me to keep those wheels. (If I am mistaken on that please let me know, that's what she shop informed me).

Hopefully the pictures load, happy to be part of the Jeep family!

PS: Should I name her?

Congrats on the new Jeep, looks good!!!

Regarding the wheels and tires; yes you can put 35s on the stock wheels (I've done it before) but you will need to address the backspace. For a 12.5" wide tire 4.5" of BS seems to be the sweet spot, so you'll need a 1.75" wheel adapter/spacer to get your factory wheel of 6.25" BS to 4.5". A 1.5" spacer should also work. Go with a name brand like spidertrax or the likes. Make sure you install and torque them correctly. And most importantly remove the factory rotor clips.

Now to the lift; I'll admit I'm a Jeep snob in this area, it makes no sense to me to remove the stock suspension that skilled, intelligent engineers put together and tested, then replace it with cheap parts. Again, sorry to be so blunt but this is a biggie to me. Spend some money on your lift and buy from a well respected company like Teraflex, Metalcloak, Rock Krawler, etc. 2.5" to 3" is the right amount for 35" tires. Over 3" you open the door to a host of other upgrades that will need to be done. You don't have to spend ridiculous money, but plan on spending at least 1k here. Make sure you do lots of research

Good luck and have fun!!

So I ended up going with a pair of Rigid Industries Truck Lite heated LED headlights. It gets mighty cold and snowy up here.

All I have to say is...WOW!! These things absolutely kick ass!! First photo is lows, second is highs.

Oh yeah, also on the 3+ lift, 2.5" will do pretty good unless you go doing some nutso flexing. The money saved from drive shafts and control arms etc, you can put on some flatties if that strikes your fancy.

Thank you for the lift advice, much appreciated. As far as that nasty crap I'm sure I will, we have a stretch up here called Franconia Notch, it has its own weather pattern lol.

First I love the grill insert and the decals on the cowling. My best friend is a firefighter and my wife is a LEO....Thank you for all you do...
I have a 2016 Rubicon Hard Rock...Rock Krawler 2.5" Max Travel lift. Couldn't be happier. I added Cooper STT Pro 315 70R / 17.... 35's on my stock Rubi wheels. I added 1 1/2" Spidertrax spacers. The only issue is "slight" rubbing on my stock passenger side fender when flexed out and turning to the driver side....no big deal for me.
With the RK lift and 35's I gained 5 1/2" of lift on my rock rails.....I'm still impressed on the clearance I have now compared to stock. No front drive shaft change either....

Thank you! Happy to do it, thank your wife for me, our friends that hold the thin blue line are heroes. I plan on doing flat fenders either before the lift or along with it so that should help.

Remove the rotor clips from all four corners?

I'm researching wheel spacers and came across this thread. I've not seen your comment of "most importantly, remove the brake clips".

So I need to remove them from all four corners? Isn't that going to make my brakes sloppy without them there?

I'm learning as I go here.

No, the clips referred to are the assembly washers that simply hold the rotor on during assembly at the plant. They can be removed with no ill effects. This is what they look like.

After a few months of brainstorming I came up with a name for her... BLACKDRAFT

I'm a fireman and it's a black Jeep, seems like a no brainer to me.

After weeks and weeks of research and deliberation I decided on my lift and tires.

I went with the AEV DualSport XT 2.5" lift and paired it with some nice 35" Nitto Trail Grapplers.

Installed it all last night in 6 hours with a buddy and my initial impression is LOVE !

I got the same grill insert for my 2012 Black Rubicon. I like the name Blackdraft. I wish I would have thought of that. I call mine Lazarus.

Good looking build, very similar to what I'm getting ready to start on my '15 JKU Sport S auto.

What gears do you have? I have 3.21s and am concerned that the added weight and bigger tires will turn it into a real dog. I pull it behind our motorhome a d plan to do some wheeling in Arizona and Utah this fall.

Apologize for the delay. The stock 3:21s are awful pushing these 35s if I'm being honest. Around town itís fine but on the highway (which I use often) itís a bear. Even with the Superchips 93 tune and 93 octane fuel. I will be regearing in the near future.

Iíve added a few minor things in the past few months.

Purchased a soft top off a former JK owner for $400. Money well spent!

Purchased a Freedom Flyer from Old Soldier Ironworks to securely mount my flag.

Finally added the Winch, Smittybuilt XRC Gen 2 9500 with synthetic rope.

Sheís getting there.

Havenít posted in a while but Iíve done some more work to Blackdraft. Upgraded the tie rod and drag link to the Teraflex HDís and swapped out those ugly OEM fenders for some DV8 flat fenders.
