2016 Rubicon Hard Rock

A trip to Asheville by car, a hop from Asheville to Atlanta by plane, another hop from Atlanta to Orlando, 2 hours at the dealership, 10-hour drive from Orlando to Franklin, and look what followed me home!

Guess I get to post in both the YJ and the JK forums now!

Dealer, Sun State Ford, nice folks. Found the Jeep on Car Gurus, only had 5,100 on the clock.

Left Orlando at 3:30 AM and drove back to Franklin. Only slept a couple of hours the night before so I was somewhat of a basket case for most of the 560 mile drive home.

Given the Dana 44's and 4:10 axels, I was expecting a bumpy, noisy and difficult ride. But 80+ was no object and everything went well..... until the wind started blowing. Had to slow my barn door down to 70-75 which made me a target for everyone else as we blasted through Atlanta. But all-in-all, it's a beast, and I can't wait to lock the differentials and climb something!

You’ll love this thing. I’ve got the same thing. Drove it OEM for a year before I got busy tweaking everything. Have fun!

Congrats on your new Hard Rock! I have the same year/model, 4:10's. They are very capable/comfortable as a daily driver, crazy good offroad! Once you wheel it, you have a whole new respect for it.

Have fun making it yours! Check into upgrading the steering with SteerSmarts linkages, that will calm down the "flighty' steering.

excellent choice

Congrats on the Hard Rock. We have a 2016 HR , it is Rhino in color.
The first thing you will probably want to do is upgrade the headlights. They should have never left the factory with those cheap headlights. I always thought my 98 TJ with Sylvania silverstars , was way better than the stock headlights on a 2016 !
Ordered the Quadratec LEDS, and never looked back, they are great ! Plug and play. Have had them for a year and no issues.
Enjoy your new Jeep !
I kept my TJ so you will probably keep your YJ , cause they're good !( and broke in)
Have a good one !

Yes, the Griffin will help take out bump steer. Going with the full Yeti linkages will really tighten up the stock steering. The stock steering, while undersized for running 35's and up also flops on the end joints. The Yeti fixes that for improved steering feel as well as much greater strength over all.

I also run the Fox ATS. That allows you to dial in more firmness.

Found another 2016 Hard Rock Rubicon with 35's, BDS Suspension with Fox Shocks, LED lights, and a ton of other upgrades that I would be doing to mine in the future. It looks like he'll take my Jeep and 5K for it. Oh, and it has a Ripp Supercharger on it as well.

Supercharge aside; there is no way I could do all the upgrades this Jeep has for 5K so it seems like a good way to get where I want to be, quickly and relatively inexpensively.

I'm wondering about buying an extended warranty on a vehicle with a supercharger? Does anyone have any experience with warranty issues on a supercharged jeep?

Thank you in advance.

2016

Hmmmm. Unless you found something wrong with the one you bought, I'd keep it and slowly do what I wanted to my Jeep. I'm not turning loose of mine.

I'd keep what I know and just take notes on the items upgraded on the 'deal' vehicle and add to my list if worthy, but I'm cautious like that.
That 'used pool' scares me after reading about some of the things going on out there, reported here on the forum.
It would be prudent to get a warranty if you jump to another Jeep wrangler.
Best regards

Yes, me too. This Jeep only has 11K on the odometer, and I like all the the upgrades (except for the supercharger) but I think I'm going to pass.

Originally I had considered removing/selling the SC and keeping the rest of the upgrades. But at the end of the day, I'm going to keep what I have and do the upgrades myself. It'll be more in the end but I'll know what I have and that it was done according to my specs.

Thanks SD40!

Congrats on the new Hard Rock! I have a 2016 Rubi Hard Rock as well. I added a Rock Krawler 2.5" Max Travel lift and Cooper Discoverer STT Pro 315 70R 17's and gained 5 1/2" of lift under the rock rails. I love this lift. I've banged it up pretty good on some trails and it's held up perfectly!

Check out @AzScooter @Buildit and my builds. We all run the same lift and shock combo more or less. I love this lift. It has performed like a champ the last year.

Great choice! You will love this lift, completely transformed my JKU. I ran the Rocksports which were a perfect match with the MC springs. I eventually switched those out for the Falcons.

I set today aside to pull the bumper off and install my 12,000 lb winch. Got most of the way through and the directions said to install the winch "center plate". What??? I didn't' get a center plate.

I went back to the Quadratec website and although the pictures show a complete install, apparently the center plate is an option.

So I put the bumper back on so that it can be driven and I'll have to order the rest of the parts tomorrow. The good news is I'm almost finished. The bad news is I have to pull the bumper off again when the rest of the stuff gets here.

No biggie...

I spoke with Quadratec about the missing center plate. Turns out that at order time I selected the mounting plate that didn't come with a center plate and another $40.00 needed to be antied up.

So I opted to pass on the plate, it was mostly for cosmetic issues anyway (covering the extra holes in the bumper) and I can think of other ways to cover the extra holes without spending $40.00. Besides, the holes don't bother me all that much anyway. :-)

Also added the Rhino lining rocker panel guards and the silver-trimmed Hard Rock decals that showed up last week.

Added these as well. I wouldn't have a Jeep without these (or something similar). I added these to my YJ a couple of years ago and they are a great help.

As I recall, I spent like $65.00 on the ones for the YJ but these were only $33.00 (for a pair.) A GREAT improvement for a small amount of $$$. Your girlfriend/wife/significant other will love getting into/out of your Jeep because of these.

Super easy install. Small investment with BIG return. A "10" on the Squerly meter... :-)

It’s always bugged me that Jeep would put fake vents on the Hard Rock “Power Hood”. So tonight, and after reading RubiconSS very thorough thread, I modified them to do what they “act’ like their doing... i.e. venting hot air from the engine compartment.

Picture (1) is what the fake vents look like "stock" after I took them off the hood.
Picture (2) is after I modified the left one to allow heat to escape from the engine compartment.
Picture (3) is what the backside of the "fake' vent looked like prior to modification, and
Picture (4) is what it looks like after I modified it.

Ops, never mind, got the answer from the link you posted.

That's on my to do list on my Recon. Are there any concerns after opening the vents? I mean rain water going to places it shouldn't go? Thanks.

Personally, I am not concerned. RubiconSS has maintained a very thorough thread since he did this modification over 3 years ago. I saw nothing that bothered me. Actually, if you look at the top of the "fake" vent, there is a hole that goes through the top where heat can exit. It's a feeble attempt, no doubt, but it's there none-the-less.

Not everyone is convinced that it's a good idea though, and you can read their views/concerns here.

I'm running the 3.3's. The ability to adjust them allows me to tune them to town(softer), interstate(firmer) and trail(completely soft). I did a write-up on them on page 41, post #1218. The Rocksports rode great and give a lot of compression/extension to work with the great flex of the MC Game Changer.

Got the "operational" air vents cleaned up and reinstalled. I didn't like the solid black, so I experimented with several other colors. Red, silver, different shade of black, etc., etc. Finally settled on this grey color.

It’s pretty easy to remove and repaint them so I may paint them a different color every day, depending on how I fell that day. 😊

It’s been four days since I started using my "ventilated hood" and so far the engine hasn’t fallen out, and the planets have remained properly aligned. The only side effect I’ve noticed is the horn is noticeably louder, presumably because of the open vents.
