Thumbs up 2016 Rubicon Hard Rock Unlimited - "Rubi Rock" Build

Hey all. Just picked up my Granite Crystal Metallic 2016 Rubicon Unlimited Hard Rock last week and figured I'd start a build thread to track what I've done and what I plan to do.

I had an 08 2-door Rubicon that I sold in December 2014 and went about a year without a Jeep. I'm thrilled to be back in the game and to have a new clean slate to start with. I built mine up from stock before and did all the mods myself. I can't wait to get cranking away on this new one.

Attaching a pic of the old 2 door I had. Highlights for that were:

- Teraflex 2" 4 door lift w/ Adjustable Control Arms, Bilsten 5100 shocks
- Poison Spyder custom brawler lite bumper
- AEV Pintler (Black) 17" Wheels
- 35" Nitto Trail Grapplers
- Superchips Programmer
- K&N Intake
- Gibson Dual Exhaust

As far as the new Jeep goes, I absolutely LOVE the Granite Crystal Metallic color. I special ordered this and am super psyched with how awesome the color is. Here are the other options:

- 2016 Rubicon Unlimited
- Hard Rock Edition
- Granite Crystal Metallic
- Manual 6 speed transmission
- Dual Top
- Black Fenders and Hard Top
- 430n Navigation
- Max Tow Package
- Auto Temp Control

And finally, a pic. I haven't had time to take any better pics yet as the weather has been crappy here and I've been pretty busy.

LED Lights:

So the first thing I decided to do with the Jeep (because you have to start buying SOMETHING, right?) was to replace some of the stock lights. With the dark color of the Granite Crystal Metallic I wanted to go with some blacked out/darker lights.

After doing lots of homework I decided on JW Speaker for most of the lights. I love the look of the new Evolution J with the half halo and like the black trim color options. The end result, I have lots of boxes of awesomeness sitting around waiting for me to install them.

Here are the JW Speaker things I got:

JW Speaker 8700 Evolution J-Series LED Headlight - Black
JW Speaker 279 J Tail Light Kit
JW Speaker 6145J-B Black Bumper Fog Lamp

And because I have the Hard Rock with the Metal Bumper, I need these brackets to install the JW Speaker fogs into my bumper:

MAXIMAS-3 JW SPEAKER FOG LIGHT BRACKETS

Next, got some Recon smoked LED lights for the fender and the parking lights:

Recon 264135BK LED Fender Light
Recon 264134BK Front Turn Signals w/ Amber LED

Lastly, nothing that I hate more than the break light stack above the spare tire. I went with these lug nut lights from Delta that I had on my old Jeep. I'll probably cut the stock tire carrier to eliminate the factory break light when I put these on:

Delta 01-6581-50 LED Lug Nut Light Kit for Spare Tire

I have all the parts sitting around now ready to install. I just need to find the time to do it. Hopefully I get some of them done this weekend! Pics of everything done will follow when they're done.

Awesome!! Look forward to seeing the progress!
I also have the JW J series headlights and fogs and love them.
1 thing you might want are a set of headlight revolution wiring harnesses for the fogs so they are plug and play and you wont need to splice the fog wires .
Plug And Play Wire Harness Adapter for Jeep JK LED Fog Lights
They just clean things up. I also have the max-3 brackets what are very helpful.

Awesome, didn't know this harness existed. I will definitely pick one up so I can keep the factory wires in one piece!

Installed the JW Speaker Tail Lights this morning. Nice and easy install. I must say that the look isn't as "blacked out" as I had hoped, and how it does in the picture, but I definitely like it better than stock.

Took less than 30 minutes!

Thanks! Won't have much time to work on it between now and the new year. I'll be away and the Jeep will mainly be sitting until January.

Once the new year hits I will be all over it!

JW Speaker Head and Fog Lights

Got the JW Speaker Headlights and Fog Lights installed. Still need to align both but am very happy with the light color and improvement over the stock lights.

To better go with the black headlights I painted the trim rings black also. I think it looks much better than the chrome would have.

One thing I was not thrilled about was the amount of play that the fog lights have when installed on my hard rock bumper with the Maximus-3 mounting brackets. Fortunately it does not appear that the lights move when driving as I don't notice any shaky lighting coming from down there.

Here's the video showing the wiggle in the fog lights.

Wheels Ordered

No ETA on when they will be in (they're on national backorder), but I have ordered my wheels. I went with the Mopar Beadlock wheels and plan to powdercoat the rock rings red just like this Jeep has.

I think the red will look amazing with the red accents the Jeep already has and the granite crystal color.

They will probably sit for a bit once they come in as I am not sure when I'll order the tires and lift. It's fine though, it will give me time to get the powdercoating done and further research the lift and decide on the tires.

I have quite a few updates to make on my build. I've been lazy about updating this thread and plan to get a lot updated on it this weekend. I'll put each one up as their own reply for readability.

The first and most disappointing thing I can report is that one of my JW Speaker lights flickers no matter what I've tried to do to fix it. I finally put in a claim through Northridge 4x4, which they then submit to JW Speaker. I took a video to show them which they're using with the claim. No ETA yet on what will be done. Hopefully they can get me a new light out soon!

Here's the video I took for them that shows the flicker. It's a little hard to tell, but you can see it.

And now for an update on the wheels and tires...

I am still waiting on the Mopar beadlock wheels to come in. I believe they should reach me in the next week, maybe two at the latest. The last word I got was that something like 600 were being shipped out to fill backorders. Mine were included in that shipment.

They then need to go to the dealer I got them from in Texas, then will be sent out to me. So, it could easily be another 2-3 weeks if I'm being realistic. Bummer!

I have however narrowed down my tire choice. I'm 99% sure at this point I am going to go the 37" Toyo Open Country R/T tires. They really seem be a truly versatile tire and still have that nice aggressive look. Not bad that they have a 45k mile warranty either!

Here's a link to the tire if you haven't seem much about them.

Our fogs are there together, both via Northridge. One of mine filled with water pretty bad. I didn't have the play like you did in that video with mine though. Weird that some do and others don't.

Good to see you painted the rings around the lights, makes it look much better with the darker lights in my opinion.

Saw you are going 37's. Did you decide on a lift, maybe I missed it?

Excited to watch this build, it would have been a very difficult decision between anvil and crystal gray had it been an option when I ordered my hard rock.

I'm actually a little disappointed with the warranty process through Northridge so far. I had to submit a video showing the flicker, and then fill out some paperwork. I was then told that they'd send that off to JW and wait for an approval and an RMA. They said I was welcome to go ahead and BUY a new headlight and that they would refund me if/when JW approves the return.

I guess it just kind of pissed me off that I just spent a TON of money there the very day before for my lift, drive shaft, tire carrier, programmer, etc. Still, no love on the replacement light.

As far as the lift goes, I went with a Rock Krawler X-Factor Stage 1 2.5". I was debating 2.5 vs. 3.5 but wanted the lower stance. I will make up for the height with flat fenders so I can fit 37s

I have a few posts to contribute to the build thread, including info on that. I have posted some brief posts in some other threads about it, just not here.

Coming along nicely my man! Sorry to hear about the JWs - but I guess that stuff happens, I'm sure they'll make it right.

Whoops, should have said our lights are there together, my fogs and your headlights.

Yeah the RMA process is a little odd, but truthfully I think that's more JWS's doing than Northridge. They had me take pics of the fog light and fill out that same form, then had me ship the lights (at my expense which irked me). My understanding is JWS is requiring that video/photo before even considering a RMA. I actually was required to send both of my fogs since they are only sold as a pair. I found that quite odd that they wouldn't just give me a replacement for 1 fog and would instead incur the cost of giving me 2 new ones (assuming they even approve the RMA).

I wish I had gone that direction on the lift, I actually think I'm going to upgrade mine to the RK line as well and go 3.5. Can't wait to see pics, it's going to look fantastic.

Yeah I really am digging what I've read and been told about the RK triple rate progressive springs. Should be a very nice on road ride.

Well, let me know how your process goes, and I will too. At least you don't really NEED the fogs. I told the lady she was crazy if she expected me to drive around with one headlight out or to put both my stock lights in. Actually went off a bit more on her just due to the fact that I felt I should get some kind of special treatment (after all, doesn't she know I'm special -- lol).

Not the end of the world, I'll just buy another and get refunded I guess.

Yeah I agree about the RK stuff I've been reading. I wish they did a 4.5" kit, 5.5" is a bit much for me. Either way I think it will be well worth the investment.

Yeah that's a good point about being down a headlight. So did you just buy the one light so you have two while you wait? My bumper looks pretty funny without fogs, but not a huge deal.

Plans to sleeve, gusset and truss the axles with those 37"? Tires that size and weight put a lot of additional stress on the axles, steering components and ball joints ect compaired to a 35" tire setup. Maybe adding hydro assist would be a good idea. Something to consider, about 3k-4K for parts and installs to beef up all those parts correctly.

Got my replacement JW Headlight and need to swap out the old one and send it back. Northridge is supposed to process me a refund on the single replacement I got once they show movement on the new light. I'll then (finally) align the headlights and move on.

The weather here has been pretty shitty with snow/ice/etc. so I haven't really done too much. Here's a list of things that I got recently, all waiting for install..

Suspension/Driveline:

Thanks for sharing all the info on your mods. I have a black 2015 JKU Hard Rock and have been trying to decide what all mods to do. I am finding it's easy to over think everything. They are expensive starter kits but love their looks even stock.

I love the red contrast you are planning for the wheels. They WILL be noticed!

Got them for 276 a piece from a Jeep dealership in PA. He has 2 sets coming in in the next few days, so I'm sure you could get the same deal. Let me know if you want his info.

Quick update

A brief update... nothing much to show so I'll just quickly list them off here...

- Dropped the front inner fender liners off to the powdercoater (Crawler Conceptz)

- Received the Mopar Beadlocks and dropped the rings off at the powdercoater along with the fender liners.

Hopefully I'll have both back this week or early next!

- Took my fenders (Crawler Concepts ultra) to a guy to have them painted. Attached is a picture he sent me today of them being painted. I can't wait to get these on, they will look sweet!!

- Took off the JW Speaker Headlights as I sold them locally to a guy.

- A local guy is custom building me some HID projectors (stay tuned)

- And today I ordered my tires. After MUCH waffling I ended up going with the BF Goodrich KM/2 in 37x12.5 17.

Need to start looking at the calendar to see when the hell I can get this lift on so I can pull it all together. Going to be a busy next few weeks -- I can't wait!
