Black 2018 JKUR Recon Build

I've had my Jeep for only a few months now, and I've been doing a ton of random projects to it, so I thought I'd start a thread to share, discuss, critique, whatever, lol.

Picked her up the end of January. She was a 2018 JKUR Recon, 6-speed manual with only 7k on the clock. Previous owner had put on 35s and spacers.

This is how she stood the day I brought her home.

Aries ActionTrac Powered Running Boards

So my wife and I are not tall people, and we have our first child on the way. I needed to make the Jeep a little easier for her to get in and out, and eventually for the baby, car carrier, etc., but I did not want to give up ground clearance. I decided that I would replace the really slick Recon Rock Rails with powered running boards which would give us convenience without giving up on ground clearance.

Actual rock sliders aren't really necessary for how I plan to use the jeep, but these will still give the body at least a modest level of protection from door dings as well as from junk getting kicked up by the tires. They are all aluminum construction, so it actually weighs less than before, and I'll never have to worry about corrosion.

HPS Silicone Intake Tube and Airaid Dry Filter

I wanted to improve the sound of the Jeep, but exhausts on the Pentastar just don't sound very good to my ears. Intakes on the other hand almost always do, but a cold air intake on Wrangler really makes no sense.

After scouring the internet for options, I decided on this combo: HPS Silicone Intake Tube, and an Airraid dry which I have not seen anyone else do. I'm really happy with the outcome, and there are basically zero trade offs. I think it looks good, it definitely sounds good, it keeps OEM protection from water, and probably frees up a few horses along the way. Oh, and did I mention, it's not expensive either!

B&M Manual Transmission and Transfer Case Shift Handles

I love having a manual again, and am so happy I found a manual trans Recon! That said, the one thing that sucked was vague, rubbery shift feel of the NSG370. I just assumed that's the way it was on these, until I read someone's review that the shift handle alone made a huge difference, even without the expensive B&M Precision Short Shifter Assembly.

I figured, let's do the easier handle installation first, then go from there. I'll admit I was skeptical that a handle alone could make such a difference, but once you take the OEM shifter off, you will understand why. The rubber isolator bushing on the OEM shifter to soft and floppy, giving you the feeling of rowing a butter knife through a jar of peanut butter. The B&M on the other hand is solid anodized, billet aluminum. The change in shifter feel is staggering!

While I was in there, I did the matching transfer case handle as well. My OCD would have killed me otherwise if I didn't!
