Granite Rubi Build

Time to give this build it's own thread. This will be my wife's Jeep, her daily driver.

Here's what we're starting with. We picked up a super clean 2016 Hard Rock with ~18K mi. on it. This Jeep was a lease, looks like it never saw dirt road in it's life.

The build ethos here will a competent overland style build. Not sure how much off road it will see, but it will upgraded none the less. As we began discussing what this build would look like, my wife gave me this to work from, "I want it bad ass looking, with lot's of lights!". I can't argue with that!

She need's this to be able fit into most parking garages(downtown). Not too tall, like my Jeep became(it's tough to climb in and out of with a business suit on, although I love watching her do it). After starting a build folder for her that contained pics of lift and tire sizes, various lighting set-ups, fender styles, etc.. We then were able to get some details nailed down.

We decide on doing a build that kept it looking like something Jeep might present at EJS. Nothing too wild, but it will make a statement. With that said, we will keep the stock fenders, Hard Rock bumpers and Rock Rails. Lift height will be 3.5", and run 35" tires. This combo is what I consider the sweat spot for a JKU. The Dana 44 stock axles will be up to running the 35's. I'll upgrade the ball joints when we get more miles on it.

Let's get some new parts on Granite Rubi! I love the look of the steel 10A bumper, and Max-3 makes some great accessories for it. We chose the Striker Guard...

With that, we added the Max-3 Stealth License Plate Bracket...

...time to address the stock headlights. The whole suite of J.W.Speaker lights were installed. 8700 EVO J 2 Headlights, 239 J2 Turn Signals, 6145 J2 Series Fogs, and 279 J Series Tail Lights...

...next up was the addition of the Quadratec 2" Hitch with Wiring harness...

* I'll have more detailed write-ups on all mods on my Blog: www.expeditionbuilds.com *

Added the Smitybuilt Beaver Step. This is great to use as tow point, step up for roof access, as well as a landing point off road, keep you off the bumper.

The accent color on this build will be red. Looking at possibly having a set of rock rings power coated red...hmmm.

Small additions. Max-3 flashlight holder. I run one of these on my Jeep, and love having a flashlight always ready...

The new Maglite LED's are fantastic. I was so impressed by the output, I replaced the incandescent Maglite I had in my own Jeep.

I also, installed the Mopar Stainless Steel Door Sill Guards...

Getting ready for the lift and tires, I was able to get the TeraFlex Alpha HD Tire Carrier installed. Waiting for a new 35" tire to be bolted on it!

I detailed the install in the Blog. More to come, stay tuned!

o_0... I just saw this! I'm also looking at the Dirty LIfe 9303 wheels on my Granite Crystal JKUR.

Did you get a chance to see the Satin Graphite wheels as well? My current debate is Satin Graphite or Matte Black and how they match the GC jeep.

I get that wheels are a personal choice but if you've seen them all up close, I'd appreciate any opinions you would care to share.

Hi! I've only seen pics of the Satin Graphite. I found a few pics online of graphite wheels on GC that we studied for a while. In the end, she decided she liked the contrast of the black wheels with the GC. I have to say I agree with her.

The black finish on the Dirty Life Wheels is a shinier(glossier) black than what is my Methods. Here's a pic of the 9303's...

...and the Methods on my Jeep...

Alright, so it's time for Granite Rubi to grow up! We ended up choosing a 3.5" Metal Cloak Game Changer lift for this build.

After discussing which ride height to run, we settled on the 3.5". The main reason for this being my wife's love for bigger Jeeps.

I run this lift on my Jeep, and we already know the improvements we will see in all aspects of suspension dynamics. My main goal was to make sure her Jeep could still fit into the parking garages she uses. I measured Granite Rubi's stock ride height, and she's sitting at 6'(72").

Without running a winch and any additional armor, I expect to see over 4" of lift when we get the lift and tires on. Stay tuned, lift install pics coming soon.

I was finally able to drive a Jeep with this lift on it and it's such a great kit. The flex is superb and the ride quality is amazing. I really wish I would have gone this route in the beginning of my build. I'm happy where I am now, but this is my favorite if not going with a Coilover. Can't wait to see how it looks!

The Metal Cloak lifts do deliver a phenomenal ride, and will flex like a long arm. The secret is their Duroflex bushings. I'll get some install pics posted soon. I'll do a full write-up in the blog as well as an interesting story regarding how the MC Game Changer rides.

Thanks Unbalanced! She's on the factory 3.73's. I had it in my head that we would do 4.56's with the 35's. To my surprise, she drives pretty well. So, we'll see. Appreciate your comments!

Yup, I'm currently on 3.73's as well.

While the 3.6L is peppy, I notice the longer legs at altitude (I know, not much elevation in Illinois... )

I do see a re-gear in my future. Probably 4.56's. We'll see.

Enjoying the addition to the Buildit Expedition Stable.

Altitude would definitely skew this equation. Everything I've read tells me 4.56's would be the perfect fit.

What's next on your build, any new additions in the works?

Dirty Life 9303 DT-1

Just a quick product highlight. The Dirty Life wheels have the ability to be run as a bead lock, or not. For this build, I don't need the bead lock, so we mounted the tires using standard side wall beading.

To run the bead lock, you would use a forged ring, not the ABS that is standard with the wheels.

Here's a detail of how they look using the standard bead(non bead lock)method., with supplied ABS rock ring...

I'm super happy with where we are to this point. I know we're never ~done~ with these things, are we?

Other than the gears, I still have the rest of the skids, and a driveshaft on my wishlist. Then there's always a bunch of 'little' things on the list as well.

But I'm currently mired in a full-on bathroom gut and remodel. Ouch. There's a pile of 'could be Jeep parts' dollars going into that room! If I do a nice enough job, there's another one lined up right behind...

Build List 12/27/18

I thought I might get a build list posted. It's always an interesting exercise. I'll try and list them in chronological order.

The items listed in red are still needing to be installed.

- Max-3 Striker Guard

A few small things. Added a BOLT 5/8" hitch lock. Quality seems good and love the 'key to ignition' feature...

...and another essential upgrade, M.O.R.E. Dead Pedal. It's great to sit squarely in the seat, both feet planted. Simple, effective

Nitto Ridge Grappler-First Impressions

A few thoughts on the Nitto Ridge Grapplers.

We're running 35x12.5/17's on this this build. It's very telling to drive a vehicle in stock form to the shop for the lift and tire/wheel install, and then drive away with it in it's new iteration.

I have previous experience with how a Metal Cloak Game Changer lift drives, so I knew what to expect there. But what really moved the meter for me was the way the new Nitto's drove.

The stock BFG's were feeling like knobbys under the Jeep. As I drove the first mile or so with the new Nitto's, two things were immediately apparent. First, the steering was much lighter than with the stock set-up. This really surprised me as we had significantly upped the tire size. Secondly, was the absolute quietness of the tire. The new Nitto's feel like they have less rolling resistance to them. This may be one of the factors why the stock 3.73 gearing doesn't feel too bad. I was expecting to really feel a power loss, but honestly, it's not bad at all.

We're getting some weather here in Chicago, so I'll be able to run these in snow, ice, rain and get an idea of how they perform. At this point, these are surpassing my expectations. More to come, stay tuned Amigos
