Laggy's JKUR

So I've been spotting a JK for sometime. I need 4 doors. Period. Loved my TJ over and over.

I got what I wanted. 2013 manual with some upgrades. I wanted to escape some of the obscene cash needed to build from scratch, with quality parts. It's been ridden fairly hard, but it has low miles and good bones. It was a mall crawler that was then used well, but smartly. Price was really good. I suppose I could have gotten better but this one just called to me. Can't say exactly why. I had buyer's remorse for a couple days. I'm good now. I love it.

I have my list of things. I've already added grabars front and rear. Fixed some speedo issues with flashcal that came with it. Thought I fixed a loose parking brake, but I have to go back in on that one.

Added Grabars front and rear.
Bartact seat covers (NIB full set for $175!).

Immediate needs are onboard air
Outfitting the rear
Replacing bushings in long arms, or replacing arms completely.
Steering pump, possibly steering gear then 1-ton linkages.

Nice Laggy. Are you keeping the TJ, or is it going on to the next keeper? Looking forward to what all you do to it. I have really enjoyed your TJ build. Congrats, and I think in time, you will really enjoy the JK.

Thanks Steven!!

40’s but they’re 38.25 actual. It’s a 6” long arm lift, BDS. 2” body lift. I’m gonna ditch the 2” body lift and go 38’s eventually.

I’m selling the TJ. I’ve loved it for a long time, it’s ready for the next person to enjoy!

Fixed a front wheel speed sensor. Next time I’m in there, I’m gonna hog out the splash plate opening. How silly that it’s that tight. Having to bend that wire to get it in. Sheesh.

Got some air out of power steering system. Seems to be ok for now, but that pump will
Need replacing. I want to do a nice 1-ton setup with a ram being pushed by a Redhead Steering box and a PSC pump. But I think I’m gonna go stock pump, and redneck ram package where they rebuild the pump. I should probably do my own tapping for the ram.

Although I put a Redhead box on the TJ and it’s going on 6 years without a weep or a peep.

Got a really good deal on Bartact seat covers. $175 for a 4 door set! I’ve only done one seat. Little loose, but they’ll protect the factory covers so that’s all I’m concerned about.

PO has Trucklite headlights. Fair for now, but they’re to close together. No horizontal adjustment, so instead of buying the bolts with torx heads on them, I just dremeled slots deep enough for a screwdriver to get in there. In and out in 15 minutes.

One important thing was to “break loose” the screws as they have 5/8” nuts further down the shaft. This nut bottoms out on rear ring, bringing both sides of outer ring equidistant from inner. Anyway, those screws are buried in plastic and INITIALLY, you may not be able to break them loose with just a flat head. So break the seal, per se, then make sure you can test turn with a flat head before reassembly.

Finished Bartact install. Pretty cool. Not nearly as nice as stock, but it will keep my stock seats cherry. Was gonna get Katzkin, but I need so much other stuff for the money plus F that install. Pics to follow. I can’t imagine paying full price ($600) for these cover. I’d be pissed at fit/finish. Turns out, the seller included an armrest cover, 2 molle bags and an extinguisher soft mount. Bonus. I’ll post pics tomorrow.

Right now, my focus has to be on things that will help off-road (compressor, etc). It’s a DD along with my 95 F-350 and a motorcycle. So there’s things like headliner, sound deadening, better LED headlights, new window tint, that I want for comfortability in a DD. But if anything, I didn’t use my TJ as much as I should have. Last summer I had 2 jobs, this summer it’s 1, so I’m taking advantage.

As far as off road lighting, it came with a hood mounted Warn 20” flood mounted to hood and a Rigid Radiance 20” on bottom of bull bar. Radiance is garbage. It’s hooked to fog light circuit, with is an awesome idea, but it throw a code because of Can Bus. Can’t believe Rigid is that desperate. Radiance is horrific output. Either getting sold or mounted on rear. The Warn is amazing. I somehow landed another Warn 20” flood and a Warn 10” spot, both NIB for $250 shipped. Those are both going on bull bar, over/under style. Probably do 6” floods on a-pillars. Can’t decide if I wanna go low or high. They will be turned out a bit to do what I call “pre-lighting” big radius turns (aka. Switchbacks). Backroads in AZ and rocky mtn states climb and drop a lot. Switchbacks are prevalent. The need to light them up is a priority. Cool part is, I’ll probably finish my lighting under $500. Eventually, I’ll go Morimoto Sealed Bi-Led projectors. I’d love to do their old HID retrofit 7” housings. It’s amazing in my TJ. There’s nothing like the cast and warmth of 4300k HID, not nearly as tiring as LED. But I have to take what I can get.

4.88 as I bought it. I would have gone 5.13 but it’s not bad if you’re driving assertively. Brought to you by a Pentastar with a manual. This would not be a remotely functional combo with the 3.8.

Installed Warn 20” flood in place of Rigid radiance bar. It was hooked to fog light wiring (came on with pull-out of headlight stalk. Checked wiring for ground and 12v. Capped it and wrapped it.

For the new bar, I pigtailed the relay trigger wire with the working Warn relay trigger wire. Same switch. So one switch, 2 relays. Saved some wiring and finding a switch spot. Probably gonna do the same with 10” spot when I hook it up. Relays use very little amp draw to energize the coil.

It’s stupid bright with the 2 floods. Overkill, I’d say but for $150 on the 2nd bar, I couldn’t pass it up.

Did my transmission fluid change. Had to unbolt 4 exhaust bolts and a strap, the y-pipe rotated out of the way nicely. The drain and fill plugs were not nearly as hogged-out as I though. The 1/2” drive 14mm and 17mm hexes worked just fine. Bottom was tightened way to tight. Supposed to be 22 ft-lbs. The new drain plug had some kind of thread-sealant on it. I’ve used liquid teflon on block coolant drain plugs before. That’s probably something like what it was.

Used Amsoil 5W-30 Synchromesh MT fluid. Used a hand pump that almost cleared both bottles. Poured ounce or 2 into second bottle. Fluid didn’t come out, but another ounce or 2 and it would have. Anywhere past the threads got soaked with oil. Manual says 1.9l. I’m gonna say 2.0. 2.1 and you’re flowing out.

I’ll post pics tomorrow of exhaust that I moved. Super easy. 3 x bolts with 13mm heads going into weld nuts. Flange bolt with flange nut, both used 14mm tools. Then there’s a pinch strap with a nut on a stationary pinch bolt, 15mm head.

I’d say 14 and 17mm hexes are crucial for this job. Especially if you want to go back in there. Which I could only imagine I would for a water crossing, or if significant fluid escapes when you pull tranny for clutch work.

Did I mention how happy I still am that I got a manual trans?

Stay tuned for some ARB compressor install stuff.

While the front passenger seat is out, my dog, Wrangler got a nice bed area. AC foot vents blowing on him. It’s quite luxurious.
