Planning my build, starting soon, need advice

So it finally happened, the mod bug bit! I own a 2015 Willys Wheeler and my over all goal is to have a more capable off road Jeep that is still a great daily driver. I’m planning front stubby bumper, 2in Mopar lift, 35in tires and I have a set of Barricade rock sliders I still need to install. The thing I am debating is the tire carrier. I treally like the idea of a tire carrier bumper like the DV8 single action but I don’t like the idea of putting a 120lb bumper on the back of my Jeep. I also really like the Terreflex kit with the tailgate reinforcement and tire carrier but I am not sure if that will be sturdy enough. The Smithybuilt tailgate is also another option I like but it’s a lot more work to install it and has the same concerns as the Teraflex kit.

The area I live in has really horrible roads and with stock wheels and tires my tailgate rattles pretty hard and i don’t want to stress everything back there too much. I also have concerns that the tire carrier bumper will also make a lot of noise as well because it’s just a lot of steel with a lot of potential to rattle and I’m am not feeling the need to change my stock bumper too much. If anyone wants to give some advice I would really appreciate it. I would like to know how much the extra weight of a heavy bumper and tire carrier affects the Jeep on road well as the duribility of a tailgate re-enforcement kit.

Welcome! Cool to see you are starting a build thread

With regards to the rear tire carrier, I can whole heartedly recommend the TeraFlex Alpha HD. I've been running one for over two years now, and it's carrying a 37" tire. Rattle free, opens with one hand, and the finish still looks like new after the repeated Chicago winters it sees. My Jeep is my daily driver and sees class 7 trails in Moab every year.

Good luck with your mod choices and build.

Check out the MorRyde set up! I like the Teraflex setup but I dont like the price of it. Ive seen the MorRyde in action and its tuff. Plus, it was designed by a fellow Jeeper on the forum! Cant beat it for the money..
Welcome to the never ending mod world!

Good to hear the Teraflex is such a good product! Also MoRyde one looks pretty good as well, not as adjustable but I do like that it does not use the friction collar like the terraflex one

I have over 100,000 miles on a tf hinge/carrier and drive a lot of fast washboard roads. Most of the time I have had a heavy tire/rim combo ie either a 285/75-17 Toyo or cooper E rated tires or 35 Toyo E rated or 35 cooper. Never had any issues or noise or rattling.

+1 on the Teraflex HD carrier kit. I got mine about this time last year where I only paid for the hinge part and the carrier was included. It was during an Easter sale. I have had a heavy 35" Nitto back there and no rattles and smooth opening/closing for a year now. Been through a Western PA harsh winter this year and still looks new!

I have Maximus-3. Been on since March 2015. No rust, no squeaks, no rattles and no maintenance.

Thanks for the advice guys, I just went on a spree of buying stuff lol. Nothing like getting a raise and having credit to get a build started lol. I got LED Heads and fogs, a spare tire brake light, les tail lights for better visibility because let’s face it, stock headlights kind of suck. Up front I have a RedRock stubby bumper and a shackle mount license plate holder which should look good and stay legal. In the back I went with the MORRyde tire carrier kit, I really like the look because it’s more minimal then most of the others and it was less then the Teraflex one. I can’t wait to get rid of my 3rd break light and put the spare tire one on. With a hard top visability is scares so every inch counts. Expect some new pics soon, I’m starting some installs tomorrow and more next weekend!
