Recon replacement

Time to document my build. I've been on the forum for years but haven't posted much. I figured since I take from it all the time it's time to give back.

Over the years I have had a number of jeeps and they've gone form the household for various reasons. My first entry into the jeep world was a 2005 silver Rubicon. It was a great ride, mint condition. Bought it in 2013 with 50k miles. Sold that when I found an 03 Inca Gold Rubicon with 36k miles. I sold that one in 2017.

My daughter thought she needed to drive a jeep so we added a 2014 JKU Sport that had the offroad package that was the precursor to the Willys package. A punk kid rear ended the JKU last summer and totaled it. No body was in the jeep at the time. It was parked on the side of the road and he hit it at 50+ MPH. They can take a hit! After negotiating with the kids adjuster, aggressively, they paid me out. $3k less than I bought it for new in 2014 and it had 42k miles on it! I had to get into another jeep since they hold their value so well. That brings me to this build.

I found a low mile 9k 2018 Recon in Firecracker Red while at a snowcross race near Minneapolis. We were board waiting for the races to start and decided to cruse the jeep lot and ended up buying. I've been following DallasRecon, Jadmt, and Aldo's Recon builds to get ideas.

First additions were grab handles for the front and Synergy wheel spacers. I thought I would try these spacers in place of the Spidertrax spacers, and bonus they're red to match the jeep!

Before I turned over the 14 JKU to the insurance company I stripped a number of parts and was able to use them on the Recon. I reused the Fox ATS Steering Stabilizer, Teraflex Hinge and Tire carrier, and the Blackforest Throwback.

The plan for a lift an tires is Rancho 2" Progressive Sport with 9000 shocks, 1" front spring spacer, .5" rear spring spacer, Terafkex Sport lower front CA, RK rear track bar bracket, JKS front track bar, extended rear sway bar links, Griffin SA, Falken Wildpeak 285/75/17 AT tires

you might consider Mopar 2" coils. ride extremely well and are dirt cheap and give more lift especially if you don't want to use spacers. I believe the coils free length is longer as well so a bit more droop if paired with longer shocks.

I think I will eventually end up with them. I bought the Rancho stuff before I did any research. Had I found your build and DallasRecon's I would have went the Mopar route.

I am considering adding all my regrets on the steps in this build. It seems with every step there is another direction that may have been a better option, or something else I could or should have done. I guess that's what drives us to keep changing components, features and jeeps, and drives us into the poor house!

Here is a picture of the front Rancho springs vs. the stock Recon springs. You can see why I added the spacer.

Lift and tires installed. With the spacers I ended up getting about 1.5" of lift. 28psi shocks set at 3. Rides pretty good. I think I should have followed Dallas Recon's advice and done the C rated BFG ATs, but I am ok for now with the ride. Measuring the tires at 28psi as the jeep sits they are 33"

I had a chance to put about 60 miles on this weekend and the Falken tires are very quiet, smooth, and the ride is reasonable for an LT tire. I had KO2s on the 03 TJ and these Falkens are quieter. The 14 JKU had General Grabber ATs and I would say the Falkens are comparable to them in noise and ride. Matt at Discount Tire took great care of me with a price match on the tires and added the WF discount without even asking!!

I installed the Fox ATS, and Griffin SA this weekend. Hopefully I will get some time in the next weeks to get the rear axle centered, add a backup camera, rear seat incline blocks, add some sound control, and finish up adding the parts saved from the 14 JKU.

I added Teraflex brake line brackets. I really like these and how they keep everything secure and neat.

might just be just the angle but the lower front control arm looks wrong.

I think you have them on the wrong sides. the Teraflex should be at the frame side.

I finally added the backup camera and an LED break light at the same time. I didn't like the setup that comes with the TF Hinge carrier. Used the iCar OBD scan tool and the Jscan ap to turn on the camera function. What an awesome tool! Also changed the door bushings and added some soundproofing to the rear section.

I wish the Jscan was around or I knew about it before I bought the AEV Procal. The Jscan has a lot more functionality and very easy to use and way cheaper. I need to play around with it some more to understand all that it can do.

A couple weeks ago I clicked on an ad for some DV8 gold wheels out of curiosity and it was following me around the internet for days. I eventually broke down and had to buy them. The stinking marketing gurus who figured out how to make that happen will drive me to the poor house. With the additional rim width the 285/75 tires settled down nicely and they look just wide enough to improve the stance. I also got to get rid of the spacers which was nice. I struggled to find pictures of red jeeps with gold wheel so I was a little concerned I might not like the combination, but I am pretty happy with the new look.

I have been pondering the gold color palette on Red. Right now I lean towards the deeper bronze color. Looks good! Do you have some other pictures to show the colors?
