Teraflex HD Hinge Install

Decided to install the Teraflex Hd hinge tonight that was part of the combo sale (waiting to install the carrier part until I get the tires). I guess I should have done more research but thought this was going to be easy peasy until I found no paint under my tailgate hinges. So then I decide to google it and found this is a common thing to find unpainted bodywork under there.

With a 2017 model and exposed to PA winters of salt/snow, it looked like I was starting to get some rust forming so I taped off the areas with blue painters tape and did a couple quick coats of black rustoleum primer paint. Not sure if I will even bother going back and repainting with body color or not as you donít see it, I was more concerned with stopping the rust from progressing.

All in all I am very pleased with the result, the instructions were adequate but I strayed off after a while as the bolt holes on the hinge were pretty finicky. It definitely helps to not tighten the 6 hinge bolts down until they are all started in the threads. Hereís some before and after pics. Definitely a beefy hinge for sure!

Wow, that is alot of rust under there. I did the same hinge and carrier but i remember seeing just metal not rust. Maybe cause im in So Cal? You will love this tire carrier. It looks stock, but much stronger. Make sure your spare is right against the hinge to avoid rattles.

I just did an install on my JKU with upgraded tires and wheels, had some issues(torque), but it is all good now. Well worth it.

I bought this during Black Friday and have yet to install it. Looking at doing it this weekend. I'm tempting fate right now with 34's on QT wheels. Had to put golf balls between the tire and the bumpstops to make up the difference from the different wheel backspacing. I can't help but think that everytime I hit a bump my spare is going to fall off. I better just buckle down and install this thing.

Although it does annoy me that FCA leaves this area unpainted. Is there at least some primer or e-coat on there or is it literally just bare metal?? I've had my 2017 since Nov 2016 so it's been through two PA winters already....can't wait to see what I find behind the hinges.

Question: What size tires are you going with and which set of holes did you press the lugs into? I'm currently running 285/75-17 (34"), but may step up to a 35" later and don't want to have to remove and reinstall the lugs to raise the tire.

I only installed the hinge part and put the stock carrier back on for now until I get the new rims/tires. Iím looking at getting xd addicts in 17s with Ridge grapplers in a 35 size. Havenít ordered them yet, hope it turns out.

As best I can tell it looked like there was some sort of grayish primer under there but it was hard to tell as I had a bunch of white powder forming and it was turning rusty. I hope you find a better outcome when you take your stock hinges off! Post up a pic what you find.

Looks great! Just a quick hint...Most primers are porous and need painted to seal them off. Unless the Rustoleum primer is an epoxy primer it won't seal the metal from moisture. I'd shoot a couple of coats of paint on there just to be on the safe side.

I have mine pressed into the center holes. I have the Recon bumper and that allowed my 35s (Nitto Ridge Grapplers, 34.25 inches measured out) to fit perfectly. When I made the switch to the 37 inch Grapplers (36.25 inches measured out) I figured I'd have to go to the top set of holes, but they actually still cleared the bumper. Not by much, but it allowed me to still see out of the back window.
