The Black Wrangler X Edition Build

Hey All,

So I bought my first Wrangler last June, and got on the forums within a week or so. Since then I have been addicted. I bought an Edition X Unlimited in black, with the thought in mind that I like to take long ski trips up in the northeast, surf, and fish with other people. I definitely need the extra room the JKU provides, so it was a no brainer for me.

Anyways, I went to Rausch Creek for my first ever offroad experience this past fall and I realized right away that it's something I enjoy doing (just a shame that there's nothing closer for us long islanders). I haven't done anything crazy for mods yet, but I'll try to list some things out.

-Stubby Antenna X
-Jeep Door Sill Guards
-ORH Fastback Top
-Custom ratchet hardtop hoist (Not a mod for my Jeep, but certainly was a good mod for my garage)
-Relay Fuse Box (Much like a spod, just about $200 cheaper)
-5 OTRATTW hooked up to my relay box.
-A Pillar LED Cubes (Much needed for when I'm in New England in the winter on backroads when I'm skiing).
-Just purchased PS Crusher Corners with LED Tail light and reverse light cut outs
-Fabbed up a license plate relocation bracket with a friend
-Driver Seat Mag flash light mount

My plan is that this is going to be a slow build, as it's the first new vehicle I've ever purchased. I plan on getting some 35's on there, with a 2-2.5 in lift and a front axle swap and possibly a rear locker, and of course regear when that stuff occurs. But that's all in due time, as I promised myself I'd go at least two years before doing new tires/wheels and a lift.

Sorry for this going on forever, I'll try to attach some pictures of some of the things I've done with the help of some good friends that don't mind donating time to help me with installs and whatnot.

Here's the switch panel put together and installed next to the steering wheel on the left hand side. You can see that we got the switches that stay lit green when off, and when the accessory is switched on the bottom lights up in red.

So here's my last post for the night. I was originally going to weld something with my friend as a license plate relocation bracket, but while I was at his house yesterday he remembered he had something perfect for the job. This was a projector mount that honest couldn't have worked out more perfect. So I used the grinder to put a notch in the plate to sit nicely on the lug.

Then we cut it down, ground it, and used a drill press for a new hole for the screw/pin to sit in.

Then we traced the license plate to a piece of composite and cut it to the shape (it will be cleaned up before paint a bit)

Finally we drilled a hole to where the wire for the brake light and license plate light will go, just so it looks clean and is hidden.

We still have to prime and paint this stuff along with mounting it all back together with stainless steel hardware. The next thing up will be prime and paint for the crusher corners! I'm a bit nervous about the whole drilling and cutting into my Jeep, but my friend has reassured me many times that we will be fine. I know it's not a crazy difficult install, it just gets me anxious. I hope you all will enjoy this build a bit because I know I will!

Okay, I should say one more thing. I want this to be a Jeep that can do a little bit of everything...some rocks, mud, long distance trips for skiing and whatnot. Alright, catch y'all later!

PS Crusher Corner install

So over the weekend my friend and I installed the PS Crusher Corners (He's more handy than me, so he handled the delicate parts). I love the way they came out, but they definitely could have had better directions. It was definitely a long day, took a total of about 7 hours since we ran into some snags. One of those snags, which I didn't know or hear anything about was a curved metal behind the body of the jeep that was where two of the holes being drilled. They were the two bottom holes next to the hinges of the tailgate. Thankfully my friend had an assortment of dremels and other tools to get through this curved surface so the nutsert could fit.

All in all, I'd say it was a successful day.

Hi All,

I'm going to be in southern Georgia (about an hour north of jacksonville, Fla) for a couple months. Any members living there that would be interested in allowing me to join in some wheeling with them?

So it's been a while since there have been any changes to my jeep, but now that I have some time and some money I have some bigger plans as far as performance goes. I'm currently thinking of 35 Nitto Rugged Ridges with a 17" wheel with 4.5 BS. I'm trying to decide on a lift, thinking of the MC 2.5 true dual rate lift rocksport edition or a TF 2.5 lift.

This is where I need some help. I believe the MC lift comes with everything I need, but I want to make sure I'm not missing anything. Will I need anything else to run this setup correctly and cleanly? Is there a better lift I should be going for instead?

Just an fyi, I'll either be swapping the front axle to a rubi 44 or pro rock 44 and gear changes for those heavy tires. A better brake kit will probably be in the near future if not all at the same time, really depends on money.

Finally pulled the trigger on some things.

BFG KO2 35x12.5x17
MC 2.5 overland elite rocksport edition lift
Black rhino Tanay 17x9

Still waiting on the halfback bumper and standalone tire carrier from ace. Hoping it comes soon so I can install it before the rest of the big stuff happens.

The lift and tires won't get installed until the middle of June along with 4.56 revolution gears but things are starting to get a move on.

Got these in from quadratec two nights ago! Ace halfback and standalone tire carrier. Both seem put together really well, and heavy duty so I'm excited to install them. I should have some time this weekend to do so. Picking up the Jeep tomorrow, so more to come soon!

There was a little bit of the powdercoating scratched off from shipping, so they are sending me out some AEV textured touch up paint.

made my first big moves!

So lift and tires are on! I drove about 70 miles from the shop yesterday and it rode really well. I'll need to remove the oem rubi rock rails and cut them because they will definitely rub on the tires when wheeling, so I hope to get to that this weekend.

Now for comparison pictures.

Install of the new bumper and tire carrier this week, then I can put the 5th tire on. Wish I could get the pictures to be a bit bigger...Guess I'll have to work on that for my next post.

So after receiving the items from ace I saw that there were numerous spots on both the bumper and all of the tire carrier pieces missing powder coating so quadratec sent me some aev touch up paint. I also noticed that part of it was bent and it seemed off but I didn't think there was anything wrong because I didn't see any paint scraped off. So I installed the carrier but as I did that I was watching ace's installation video and noticed how mine clearly was not supposed to be bent in that manner. Anyway, I called quadratec, explained that this is how I received it and I'm returning it. I ordered the teraflex tire carrier instead because the ace hardware is on a significant backorder. Felt bad because I think ace makes quality stuff, but shipping seemed to have messed it up pretty good. I'm still sticking with the ace bumper as I looked it over again to make sure nothing was bent or broken from shipping. I'll add pictures once I do the install.

Got the TF hinge support and tire carrier installed today. The quality on this thing is awesome, and I'm really happy with the outcome. I'll snag a pic or two and post it tomorrow. I still have my ace halfback bumper to install, probably won't happen for another week or two due to work but we shall see.

Went to test fit the ace halfback and it just barely fits, maybe a centimeter or two of clearance with the tire, but now I cam breathe that it fits. Hope to mount it soon. Here's a shot of how it sits currently!

I'm just a bit bummed because I no longer have a garage since I moved to NJ, so I can't find a place to store my hardtop to get the soft top back on. Oh well....

Took the doors off yesterday and went for a little drive around town. I'm trying to find a day or two to go wheeling, it's killing me not to get out there and test this new stuff out. Bumper install this week.

Ace Halfback Installed

Finally got the rear bumper installed. Pretty easy, just had to drill one hole into the crossmember then hit it with some paint. Thinking the next big thing will be the Dynatract Pro Grip Brake System to deal with the bigger tires and added weight.

Starting to think it's time to get rid of the decals on the hood, what do you all think? I mean it isn't a common edition people have, which is cool, but I'm not sure if I still like it much.

Cool build! Nice to see another black X edition on here. I purchased ours (my wife and mine) X edition about 3 months ago and have made some upgrades. We have the TF leveling kit with 285/70/17 Cooper Discoverer STT pros, 1.25" wheel spacers, LED headlights and fog lights, I tinted the front blinkers and the side markers and painted the stock exhaust black. My wife and I both like the side decal as we think it helps make it stand out from every other jku out there as there are so many. Just our personal preference, I think it would look good without it though as well!

Thanks so much! Like you said, glad to see another x edition on here, they definitely are not models I see out often. Yours looks awesome, I need to get on headlights and fogs as well, you've beat me to some good stuff! I do like the side decals like you said as well, and I really like the upholstery too. Get a build page going soon so I can follow!

Trip to Rausch

Finally got to Rausch this weekend. Jeep performed great, even when we accidentally found ourselves in a blue black trail in Area 51 and on the tight spots on J trail. Dynatrac progrips are getting done next week, which will be great because I really needed to press my foot down hard while in 4low to come to a complete stop. Here are some pictures, looking forward to getting out again and trying some harder stuff.

Just got the jeep back from doing the Dynatrac progrips. Feels a bit squishy right now, hoping they just need some time to break in. Of course when I spoke with the shop, they were changing out the diff fluid, and the rear diff has some metal filings attached to the cap.

They said the spider gears are getting torn up from the 35's, so I set up a time up a time next month to do a tru trac limited slip to fix that. Will be a nice upgrade, just wasn't expecting it to happen so quickly. I definitely am truly now understanding Just Empty Every Pocket.

Womp Womp....
