1987 resto

Just joined the forums and am in the process of taking apart and rebuilding my '87 Wrangler. I plan on keeping as many of the original parts that I can. Thus far i have removed the front body panels and pulled the head off the old 2.5. Going to take the head to work and clean it all up and machined if needed. The Jeep hasn't ran for about 7 years so its going to need a lot of work with all the dry rotted wiring, seals, and plastic bits. I work as a full time diesel mechanic, so I the process may be a little slower than I would like, but I will update when I make progress.

After pulling the head off, the engine had at the least a blown head gasket, intake, and exhaust leaks. Going to try to rebuild the 2.5 as its easier and cheaper than trying to swap in a 4.2 or another engine.

The combustions chambers have some odd coloration to them. Not too sure what thats all about. Almost looks like rust, which may have been caused by the blown head gasket and the horribly rust filled coolant, but this engine hasn't turned over for at least 7 years. So this is going to be fun to rebuild this engine, will probably spend most of the time doing so

Any tips or pointers are welcome.

Excited to see the progress! Looks like you have your hands full! Always wished that I knew how to take apart an engine.

Been hella busy with work lately so haven't done too much work to it, damn busses keep breaking down all the time lol.

I did take a few hours and finish clearing out the engine bay this afternoon though. Got it down to just the short block in the engine bay. Started tackling the nightmare of old and bodged together wiring harness, luckily most of the aftermarket connections were just twist and taped.

The picture of the nasty ass connector is the one that plugs into the firewall. I plan on just rebuilding the harness myself since aftermarket ones are so pricey,

Anyone can take one apart.... It is the putting it back together that will get you.

Anywho, I will follow along with another '87 build.

My firewall plug had the same nasty crap in it. I thought the PO had used some Permatex to seal out water or something. It looks like the factory might be guilty.
I picked most of it out and used dielectric grease to replace it.
