1995 Jeep YJ "Gecko"

If you haven't already checked out my other YJ, "Belle", you can do so here: https://www.wranglerforum.com/f330/9...a-2161137.html

For those that have followed along, you know that I've been struggling as to the direction of where to take her. As she sits, Belle is quite capable and reliable. A solid running 4.0L, dual e-lockers, built Dana 44's and 35" tires can do quite a bit. That said, I've been wanting more. Not so much more from Belle, just wanting to take the step to much more difficult and challenging trails. Unfortunately, the truly challenging trails in the area almost guarantee a certain amount of body damage - and in some cases, severe body damage. Rather than ruin Belle's rust-free, all-Arizona body, I found a surrogate. Meet "Gecko", as my kids so affectionately named her...

So what becomes of Belle? Good question - she'll mostly stay as is. I have been wanting to convert to coilovers but the narrow (60.5" wide) axles simply won't allow it. Instead, I'll add some wheelbase and swap over to a set of TJ coils and mid/long-arm setup. This will take some time of course as I need to wrap-up my RamCharger build (finally got the stroker motor back from the machine shop) and want to get Gecko moving.

I picked up Gecko, with it's 100% rust-free frame and body for a whopping $400. I gave the seller $50 to deliver and ensure that it had a transferable title ready to go. I figure I can sell the bumper, fuel tank, 4" TrailMaster lift and factory 4.10 axles for at least as much money as I paid for it.

Plans for Gecko include...
  • 5.9L Magnum w/46RE swap
  • 04 Super Duty axles (D60/10.5")
  • Atlas 4.3:1
  • 39"-40" tires
  • 105-108" wheelbase
  • 14" coilovers
  • Hydro Assist
  • Hydroboost
  • 3/4 link setup
  • Flat dash, Spartan interior
  • Full cage, armor, flat bottom, typical crawler stuff

This will be my first foray into building a 3 and 4-link suspension, so I have a lot to learn and will likely have many questions along the way for those with the experience.

Weird... It totally works for me, on both my computers, iPad, and iPhone... I fixed the original post and added some pics the ol' fashioned way!

This likely means Belle's build page is missing a bunch of helpful pics!

Isn't it great that you can pick up a "whole" Jeep for $400?! Can't wait to see where you go with this one.

Nice start pc!

I am actually going to do up another YJ as you are planning, for basically the same reasons. The Keeper really is a pretty nice, low mile example, and as much as I enjoy fire roading and snow ‘wheeling with it, I have purposely avoided some of the more challenging locations that I have historically done over the years with my other 4WD vehicles. I still have some steering upgrades and cage work planned, but then I am going to put miles on it, and start building another street legal, very capable trail rig with in all probability LS power.

Like I said, nice start, and what a deal for a titled roller for $400!

Yeah, the more I thought about it, the less and less I wanted to take Belle "down" for a year or so while I get the suspension and axles built. Building up the Gecko will allow for a lot of flexibility in the build itself, as well as the build process. I don't need to worry much about anything in regards to cabin space or amenities (like a radio, though I may have a small one) and I can cut and slash as desired (building for function rather than trying to blend "form" into it).

Belle will be my "traveler" and will still get worked on. A cage is indeed next for me, as are some harnesses for trail work. I have been doing a bunch of research and reading on adding a set of TJ buckets and coils, which seems about as straightforward as it can get. On the rear, I may go with the Motobilt XJ stretch kit, but run a set of GM 52" springs for a 3--3/4" to 4" stretch (coupled with a 2" stretch up front). Sticking to a 4" rear stretch will allow me to run GenRight stretch corners and my Metalcloak flares, which will keep the tires somewhat covered and keep the "Jeep Police" off of me when I travel to other states. At that point, I'll outboard the rear shocks (likely will recess into the frame behind the axle), which will address something I've struggled with in this Jeep (rear shock length has been my "limiting strap" for a while).

For sure! Considering what I'll be able to sell the 4.10 axles and fuel tank for, a "free" project starter is even better Honestly, it couldn't have worked out any better - somebody already removed the engine and interior for me, meaning it's less I have to do and also less I have to deal with (like selling a 2.5L/AX5!)

Will do! You can have the springs and shocks if you want them as well...

I'm looking at late spring/early summer before I can officially wheel this into the garage and start working on the suspension.
