94 YJ build (pic heavy)

So, I found this 1994 4 clyinder yj on craigslist last night. The only problem was, it was over 3 hours away We texted back and forth for bout an hour and locked in on a price. I only paid $1200, seemed like a good deal

The good - minimal rust, worst spot was some bubbling around the windshield, no frame rust. It's already been lifted, already got a tow hitch and aftermarket front bumper, new radiator (the lift appears to be 2 inch body and a shackle lift )

the bad - needs a paint job, engiine has a small oil leak, the steering has about 6 inches of play that has to get fixed first before I do anything else, can't downshift into 3rd without a slight grinding the tires on the jeep kill the gas milage and ride horrible. I'll be getting smaller tires and wheels ASAP as this is meant to be a daily driver some day.

cont.....

It came with a soft top. I havn't looked close at it yet, but I'm pretty sure it's inn bad need of replacing. The interior was already herculined and has a CD player.

Tommorrow I'm going to try and start paint prep for the bumper and maybe the windshield frame

It was approx 4 hour drive home....seeing as though 5th gear was mostly useless, lol. And there's so much play in the steering that I was fighting the wheel the entire time...it was very exhausting. I was the slowest thing on the road....maybe smaller tires and wheels will give me a few mph back. My GPS said that the speedo was about 10mph off, from the tires I guess.

Yeah, that's what I thought. THe guy orig. listed it for $700 !! and a small bidding war broke off. I was about to say screw it, but then I remebered I had today of and I sent him a "bid" for $1200 and said that I could pick it up today by lunch and he wouldn't have to wait for the weekend and hope the other bidders came through. Deal! Real nice guy and a decent yj for the price. Now I just need to get it road worthy before all the nice weather's gone

I'm looking on craigslist for smaller wheels / tires now.....maybe someone wants to trade for these monsters

I think you got a great deal there.
I just spent $1,175.00 for a tub and tailgate.
You got a whole jeep for $25 more.

Day two - Front bumper sanded, primed, and painted. I also took that grill overlay off....all of the chrome had already flaked off anyway. I think I'm going to figure out how to take the windshield and grill off next.

Also got a guy willing to trade his 31's and wheels for my monster 33's that I want gone.

Nice, Great deal

The yj looks lots better already with the chrome gone. Can't wait to see the progress unfold.

I think the Beaver teeth was referring to the shackles....

You'll need a torch to get the windshield off. Those bolts are stubborn, big time.
Heat the bolts thoroughly and use an impact wrench. they should come out relatively easy.
Don't work them too hard or you will strip the torx heads and have to drill them out.

didn't realize they were that hard to get off. Is it just from rust?

Great find and dude fix that steering I'm not a huge fan of the Smittybuilt tube like bumpers but I dig this one, the brush guard and the fact that it's not chrome makes it look rugged and clean and not bulky and loud. If you could fit a winch on that bad boy that would be epic.

Ok, so I worked on the yj for what must have been 4-5 hours today (my one day off and it was only 60 degrees instead of the 80+ it has been for the past week .....
Anyway.....In the past days I've sanded the side mirrors and primered+painted them...these were kind of a test of the paint I wanted to use for some other things. It turned out pretty good I think. It's Rustomeum (sp?) Hammered Finish. I've used the stuff to paint the olympic weights in my home gym and I like the finsh, So I put to the test.

Also, I'm sure I'm gonna catch hell for this....but I swapped my monster tires and wheels for some stock wheels and some Michelin SUV tires. The ride improved 100%. The Hammered finsh actuially matched the color better than the pic looks.....but the actual Jeep is so dirty, that the clean mirror looks like a comlete diff shade of black.

Next I used some chemical paint stripper on the spare tire holder......what a mess. That will prob be the last time I use that stuff. I'll prob use the Hammered Finish on it was well since it will be covered by the spare anyway. Speaking of which I still need to find a spare wheel and tire.

I also adjusted the steering box and started to replace the steering damper with a new one from Orieley's ($30.....until I got to the point where I needed a pittman arm puller for the tapered bolt and didn't have one. I'll pick that up tomm on the way home from work.

Today I started painting the stock wheels black. I scuffed them up with scotch brite and then primed and painted(Hammered finsih again) The first one is still drying, but the color looks deep and I think it will come out good.

I'm doing this process one wheel at a time...mainly because I've only got 2 jackstnads and I usually one have time after I get home from work to do one anyway.

While I have the wheel off, I took the calipers off the wheel and cleaned and lubed the guides and pins so the brakes are smooth and not sticking. I'm also cleaning the wheel well and surrounding frame/ all exposed steel and spray painting it will some black

The last pic is of my "top" .....this is pretty much how I got it.....in a heap. I'm hoping to find a good deal on craigslist for a hard top before winter.

it only took like 3 minutes. I thnk there were 3-5 sheet metal screws and two tabs that were folded on the bottem, but it was so old that they didn't really hold anything.
