95 YJ Stroker Build

This is going to take a bit to get to current date but Iíll start at the beginning when I purchased my YJ in December of 2016 for $6000.

I bought this Jeep while my home was being built and stayed in an apartment for a couple months. I bought the Jeep as a project and something to take on the trails. Iím not mechanically inclined but I figured this would give me a good lesson. The Jeep was in good shape with only a small trans issue (yet to fix still). Couldíve been a good weekend warrior in its original form but thatís not me.

1995 Jeep Wrangler Sahara
218K Miles
Stock except for wheels and tires.
Used as a tow behind a RV.

Pic from Craigslist

First day of ownership.

After looking the Jeep over it was apparent that the Jeep still had the original springs that were really worn and rusty. First purchase was for a 2.5Ē TrailMaster lift kit.

Thoughts on this lift is that the shocks were trash and a 1Ē transfer case drop was needed. After the lift, I was up around 4Ē of total lift. It has settled some since.

Next purchase was to get decent tires to go with the lift. I picked up a set of 33Ē BFG KO2s

Buddy took me out on a few local trails to test out the Jeep. Did pretty well and had a good time.

95 YJ Stroker Build

As my plans are to make this Jeep capable on the trails I decided on replacing the D35 with an 8.8 with 4:10 gears and LSD. While at it I had the D30 regeared as well and added a Aussie locker.

After the install I took the Jeep out to Uwharrie and the springs are still pretty stiff and after this trip I realized I had to change out the shocks. I picked up a set of Bilsteins.

My mom purchased a TJ right before I bought my YJ. She actually met the prior owner of my YJ when deciding if she should buy one or not. She had met him while he was doing some work on our church. Ironically I purchased the Jeep a month later.

Occasionally Iíll take the YJ to work, only when itís not extremely hot outside as Charlotte can get.

The tires were bumping against the rear flares so I decided to replace them with some steel fenders. It would be a while before the front got replaced.

After driving the Jeep I realized I had a decent exhaust leak and replaced it with new Dynomax muffler. Sounds similar to stock which is what I was hoping for.

95 YJ Stroker Build

A buddy was selling his ARB bumper off his TJ for $200. It was a direct swap except for a little trimming near the shackle.

Entered into a contest with Motobilt and won the rear tag relocator. Added a new third brake light as well.

While on vacation in Asheville I stopped by Barnes 4wd and picked up a new rear bumper. The guys there are great and really know their stuff when it comes to Jeeps.

Added rear armor to cover the damage to the tub and replaced the rear tail lights.

Took the Jeep back out to Uwharrie with the Jeep club.

Getting back from Uwharrie I realized that my steering needed to get replaced. I swapped in new stock steering for now.

Took a cruise and one of the stops was to Cuba and saw some pretty old Jeeps. This Willyís and a cool Toyota in Havana.

I bought a set of front fenders from Wizard Works that are basically bolt on. The only issues are the washer fluid reservoir doesnít fit as well as the air box. Forgive me for the redneck K&N on the intake.

This was the last picture of the Jeep with the original engine. Freedom 4wd was set to install a 4.7L Stroker! I had new motor mounts and a radiator added as well.

After the install there has been a persistent leak that looks like a rear main seal. Had the shop install 2 separate seals and it still leaks. Doesnít look like the oil pan or valve cover.

Decided to finish up the interior and put down Bedrug in the interior. The front had some sort of nasty vinyl while the rear had the original spice carpet. The front floor was in good condition other than the drivers pan.

The rear was in amazing shape down to the paint. Now Iíll just need to rewire the rear speakers to the stereo and the interior will be done.

Hopefully Iíll get some interior pics soon. While fixing the floor pan Iíve also noticed the seat riser for the driver seat is cracked. Itís always something to fix.

So how does it run compared to the stock 4.0. What did they do other than strocking it? Cam, porting etc....

Curious because I have a spare yj 4.0 im going to build into a stroker. And would like to hear your thoughts.

This was a complete engine swap, so Iím not exactly sure the specifics. I do know itís got a Comp Cam and I added 24lb fuel injectors. Eventually going to add a 62mm throttle body.

Honestly, I wasnít exactly blown away by the added power. Definitely a noticeable increase, but I guess I had expected more after reading through comments and reviews on it. I think Iím a bit spoiled by my JL which has a turbo.
