In my adventures playing in the mud I discovered a weakness in my Jeep that it is now time to address. Even though it is not built to play in the mud I just can't help myself and it will find its way headlight deep again in the future. I want my Jeep to be able to handle whatever stupid things I decide to do. There were several times that the engine ingested troubling amounts of water. I would prefer that to not happen again. I have been researching and brainstorming the "best" way to build a snorkel that is both unique and will solve my issue. I decided to mount the base to the plate recessed into the passenger side fender and will simply go straight up from there. I am going to build a cool "hat" for it that will install on the tube in a similar fashion to a typical air cleaner, with a wing nut. This will allow me to take the hat off and run a longer extension tube if I play in the deep stuff and have a shorter, less offensive, tube for normal use.

I started building the base out of some scrap steel. The base of the base is 14 ga. steel that will have bolts welded to it that will pass through the fender for attachment and will also have a short piece of 4" tubing for the intake hose to attach to. The outer shell of the base is constructed from some left over steel from a Square Body Chevy hood. I like that it will have the center body line to give it some character. The "hat" will match.

I got the air intake hat started last night. I wanted to retain the center ridge from the square body hood, but I didn't have enough material left so I had to do it the hard way. My design had a total of 5" of the center ridge.... let me just drop in my design.

The overall length is 8" with 1/2" flap to finish the front edge. I only had about 5" of hood left with the ridge. I ended up cutting the hood into a 4" piece and a 1" piece and welding in flat pieces to fill the gaps. I was planning on using a solid piece of hood, cutting out the ridge, and hammering it flat where needed. It would have been a ton less work and I could have gotten it smooth much easier. I will spend more time with the hammers and dollies, but will most likely have to use some filler to get it right. This is more involved than I wanted to get with it, but my OCD requires it. Here is where we are...

I did a little more work on the air intake last night.

Base plate for the side piece so I could transfer the holes. There will be bolts welded to the side plate because it would be very tough to get inside to hold a wrench once it is fully welded.

Here is a visual mock up of where the hat will end up at it's lower position.

This part will be welded to the fender and will be the minimalist option for when damaging the other pieces is a concern. The screen will be welded in as well.

A view from the inside. I will use a rubber coupler here and on the air cleaner. The intermediate pipe will be pie cut and welded.

I gave my drill a workout last night. Cutting 4" holes in steel really pushes my old drill. I cut holes in three sheets of 16 ga. and two sheets of 14 ga. It was smoking a couple times.

I was hoping that I could use the pilot hole in the wood to then cut a 5" circle to build my flanges, but the plywood was not strong enough. I will have to cut the outer circle by hand.

I got the top plate and the side plate on the side box burned in. I guess I didn't get a pic of the completed side plate with the 4" hole cut and the bolts welded in. Here are a couple shots of it on the fender.

Then I welded to bottom plate with the 4" hole on the intake hat.

I really like how it is coming out. I am happy that I can keep it below the upper tube of the fender so it can tuck in a little tighter and of course not cover up the DaddyJeep logo.

I spent more hours that I had anticipated finishing up the air intake over the weekend. I spend most of Saturday and a couple hours Sunday getting it done. I just need to pick up another coupling and some hose clamps. for now some duct tape has it sealed up. I was pretty surprised how much quieter the engine is now.

Finished side box before paint.

Side box and hat... low configuration. I even made my own little bowtie to held it on.

Lift tube showing the stud welded in on the bottom and the welded nut on the top.

Lift tube and hat... high configuration.

Now for under the hood. All of my tubing cut at 22.5 degree angles. I love my horizontal band saw.

All welded together. I had to dent the pipe a bit for clearance around the battery tray.

Finally, all painted up and put together.

Looks great, you may find that you want to rotate the intake to point inboard to avoid ingestion of water/mud/etc. thrown up by moving forward. If I followed your design correctly it is just a matter of rotating the top intake connection.

You are correct sir. The hat is not indexed so it can be rotated. Once I build some fenders it will be better.

I got the last piece of the air intake installed, a 4" sh...poop pipe connector. Hopefully the non automotive grade rubber connector holds up ok. I couldn't see spending $20 for something that I could get for $7. Maybe I will end up spending the $20 later if this one fails, but I think it should be fine for the little bit of use my Jeep sees.

If that thing can hold up to the poo, it should hold up fine where you have it 🤣

I am rearranging the shop and came across the new seats for the Jeep that I haven't installed yet. Maybe I should get on that at some point. They are from a Subaru Impreza. They are certainly more comfortable than YJ seats, have more support, and I think that backs are a little thinner so it will help with back seat space.

I also needed to move this monster. I put the engine stand beside it to show just how big this machine is. I had been storing it for a buddy that recently passed away. I guess I should learn how to TIG weld. This is supposed to be a really good old machine.

You could always use almost any DC stick welding machine for tig too. Never saw one of those like you have there, interested in seeing how it does!
