I just wanted to share what I have completed thus far on my YJ build.
but before that, a bit of background.
I previously had a 2011 JK and purchased an Spod for it to run a lot of accessories. It worked great and I never had any issues with it, but when I sold the JK the spod went with it. A couple years later I have another Jeep that I can mess with and looked at getting an Spod. I didn't want to spend a $500 to $800 on getting something prebuilt that I can't expand on if I needed or wanted to. I looked around and decided to build my own! I started out with limited knowledge of electrical systems (generally speaking), but I've always been more comfortable with 12V DC circuits, so I just started reading the forums and random online resources and developed a plan for what I wanted.
My first hurdle was were to place the relays and fuse blocks. looking around on here I saw a couple people putting 50cal. ammo cans under the hood where the scissor jack usually sits. I thought this would be a great place and I just happened to have a spare 50cal. ammo can sitting around so the planning continued.
I purchased most of the parts for this build on Amazon and/or local parts stores like Napa or Autozone. Most of these parts are pretty typical car electronic parts so sourcing was pretty easy. Below is a quick list of some of the major components.
- Blue Sea Systems 12 Circuit fuse block with common Neg. buss
- (2) Hella Relay blocks
- 12ga SXL copper strand wire
- 18ga. SXL copper strand wire
- Ring and spade terminals
- 4ga. Battery Cables (Pos and Neg)
- 100A Breaker
- 200A continuous Solenoid
The basic premise of the build it to have everything running though the 100A breaker to the solenoid (to have a master switch for the whole box), then power running to the Blue Sea System's fuse block with each circuit fused and running to the individual relays, then relay out to the accessory.
So far I have 8 circuits ( with a possible 12 available) each one is currently 30A which should be plenty for anything I need. With this set up I am actually limited by my alternator and battery, but when I really start running a lot of juice though it, I will have a dual battery setup and a high amp alternator to handle it.
I was able to finally get it mounted in the jeep today and have some pictures below. ( I hope they attach okay)
