New Engine for a newbie

Does it make any sense to ask for tips on a few important things to look for whe shopping for an engine. I need to replace a 258 in a 95 YJ. Is it crazyvto look on CL? Any pointers, do’s don’ts...
My son I appreciate it all!

Are you replacing the stock inline 6 with fuel injection? If so that is a 4.0L =244 cubic inches not a 258 which came in 1990 and earlier with a carburetor not fuel injection. Personally I would go with a rebuilt from a reputable source or a used motor with know history that you can here run. Just my opinion.

Original was the 4 cyl, a 1990 258 was then put in. Original wiring harness and all still there

Finding a used engine should not be hard, but finding a good used engine that you can install without rebuilding first is a real challenge. If you don't mind doing the wrenching to install an engine only to need to pull and rebuild it do as much due diligence as you can and buy a used one.

My son has found a new passion and thrown himself into this jeep, even over Fortnite, which is great in itself. So I think we could definitely figure a good hand full of thongs out. Whats the most important things we should look for in shopping? I figue putting a 258 back in would be eadiest, I think its still a solid engine for now...

That is your only choice if you don't want to get into major modification. Any other engine will require different engine mounts and a host of additional changes.

If you can find an engine that is in a vehicle you can hear run it makes you feel better. Something with maintenance records would be a great plus. Both are going to be hard to find so you end up finding a used motor from a place with some form of warranty with the lowest miles and take a chance.
