Not my YJ

So last Saturday I purchased an 89 YJ Laredo, 4.2L, Automatic for my daughter, who is about to get her license.

This jeep is really clean! It has 66k original miles and the only rust I could find was on the window frame. The PO had replaced the heater core, carburetor and brakes. The only REALLY SAD part is all the pin striping and Laredo decals have all been pulled off.

I could see that it needed plenty of work, but mostly little things.

So far I have:
- Changed the oil
- Replaced the plugs
- Cleaned the carb

On the way to get it inspected, the blinkers stopped working. Of course, it is the switch in the steering column. So, I've started on that.

It also leaked gas when I filled it up. I can see hat one of the vent valves has popped out. I plan to drop the tank later this week. While I am there I will replace the sending unit and the two vent valves, plus any hoses that look the least bit suspect. This jeep has the plastic tank, which is supposedly the 20 gallon tank (I put in almost 16) so I hope there are no other issues on the top of the tank.

Once these things are done, I plan to change the rest of the fluids. I will install all new window/door/hard top seals. Then, it needs new springs and shocks.

I'm sure your daughter is excited to be getting a Jeep. Since you will be replacing the springs and shocks are you going to a little bit of lift while you are at it?

My daughter really doesn't want it lifted, so I'll probably go with stock height springs.

So, I guess i should post a little jeep porn.

Managed to get to the switch in the steering column last night. And... it's the light in the PRD21 indication, so I'll have to dig deeper. Then I drained most of the gas from the tank in preparation for dropping the tank.

I just need to receive all the parts I've ordered. Saturday is going to be a long day of wrenching, if it all gets here.

Today I dropped the tank and got it cleaned and prepped for the new vents and sending unit. Just need them to get here. The old sending unit is toast and the filter just fell off when I picked it up. The gaskets on the vents were also shot. I will replace all the hoses when it goes back in. Also odd, I have no baffle in the tank.

My daughter was pulling the front differental cover while I worked on the tank. We got them both cleaned up with new oil.

So further down the to do list is the valve cover gasket. Should I also replace the cover while I have it off? Is there some way to know if I should replace the cover?

Nice jeep. AFAIK, valve covers shouldn't need to be replaced unless they've been bent quite a bit and you're not getting a decent seal with a clean gasket install.

Thanks! I was happy about the price, knowing it would need a little work. But a few more surprises and maybe not...

The tank is back in with all new hoses. Gas gage works now. Blinkers work. Hopefully now it'll pass inspection.

It has been a slow couple of weeks on the jeep front. The only thing I've really done is learn how to troubleshoot the windshield wiper system. Turns out that the switch in the steering column is busted. Now I need to take it apart for the second time. Got one on order now. I'll officially be an expert in disassembling the steering column after that...

Engine is really running nice now that it's been thru a couple tanks of gas.

There is a squeak in the engine bay. I think it's the fan clutch, but not sure how to know for sure. It's pretty stiff to turn by hand. More so than I would expect, like you can't spin it at all, but you can turn it by hand.

I got the wiper switch replaced and then promptly let the magic smoke out of it. So, I had to purchase another one. What a PITA trying to get the wipers to work right. I also replaced the key/lock while I was in there... because I broke the other one because I was stupid.

I want the intermittent to work and the wipers to park correctly. I tried to fix the existing intermittent relay by replacing the broken spring and cleaning the contacts. Then I bought one off ebay. The spring in it was broken so I fixed that. Neither one worked. Is there a reliable place to purchase one?

Seems I haven't updated this thread in a while. Couple weeks ago we dropped the front windshield and replaced the original speakers. While we were there we replaced that front gasket and installed the wiper kit that makes the wipers park flat at the bottom of the window. Also installed a Kenwood head unit. It's nothing fancy, but it is modern.

This weekend I got to the heart of the matter. I pulled out the distributor, cap, ICU and computer. I installed an HEI from Summit. What an upgrade!!! I haven't started yanking wires yet. I want to replace the air cleaner first and get rid of the spider web of vacuum lines first.

So I've also been wondering what carburetor I had. Found a stamp on the side that says Weber O-2731, but I cannot find any information on that. Then, last night I was looking at Quadratec, trying to find the hold down clamp for an air cleaner, and realized it looks exactly like a BBD. So, seems the mystery is solved. And, of course, the part I need is impossible to find new. Guess I need to find a good salvage yard, but don't know of any near me.

Last week I replaced a couple pieces of soft fuel line that I had missed. Also replaced the fuel pump.

I have a stack of springs and shocks that are up next.

Looky Looky! I switched to chrome and now I can post again...

I have done a lot of small things and a couple bigger thing like new stock springs and shocks, front and rear U joints, motor mounts. Jeep is running pretty good.

For Christmas I replaced the valve cover gasket with the blue felpro gasket.
Then I degreased and pressure washed the engine. It's been 4-5 days and there is no oil under the jeep. I didn't think such a thing was possible.

Here is a before and after picture of the engine. And, I've got quite the collection of old parts that I need to dispose of.

Yesterday I dropped the window to replace the wiper motor because the old one would not park. The "new" one had a wire loose. After soldering that I got it installed. And, the new one seems to randomly park in about three different places. Plus there is an almost indestinguishable difference in speed between low and high.

While I was there I figured out where I was leaking water into the cab from. There was a small gap in all the cracked caulking. Some silicon fixed that until I save up for a paint job. The carpet is finally back in after months without it.

It was good to knock one thing off the to do list, but I had hoped to get two things. Not sure if it's worth doing anything more to the wipers. I do live in Houston though, and we've been known to get a little bit of rain.

Now that I am not leaking oil, it's time to address the transmission. Yesterday I flushed the transmission by removing the output of the cooler and running it into a bucket while adding fluid. I also added a tube of Dr Tranny Instant Shudder Fixx. It has a shake at about 35 mph. I have not driven much since, but my daughter says it's a little better.

I have a pretty bad transmission fluid leak. It's a 32rh. Here are a couple pictures. My diagnosis is that the rear seal is busted. The skid plate is soaked. Any opinions? I don't think it's at the shifter.

Looking at videos, it sounds like I can drop the skid plate and replace the seal by just pulling the transfer case. This is beyond anything I've done before. I don't mind being adventurous, but this is an area that definitely pushes my comfort level. Any good advice? Also, anything I should do while i'm in there?

Here is one more picture. There is a lot of fluid on the pan. I already replaced the filter and pan gasket. The bolts were on pretty much finger tight before.
