2017 Galactic Edition honoring Star Wars 40th Anniversary

Jeep seems to make a special edition for everything else, but somehow they missed the 40th anniversary of the original Star Wars movie. I am of a certain age where I fondly remember the original series from my early childhood, and I have three children ages 9 through 14 who are fans of the modern series, so it just seemed natural to have a little fun with my new 2017 JKU.

My goal is to add cosmetic touches to create what Jeep might have envisioned had they seen fit to create a special edition for the anniversary celebration this past spring. I'm also trying to be careful not to run afoul of any of Disney's copyright protections, which is proving more difficult than I had originally envisioned.

The final (is any Wrangler customization ever really done?) product will have a mixture of custom vinyl, custom metalwork, and a few re-purposed 40th anniversary licensed parts. The Jeep is dark gray, and I'm keeping everything subtle so a casual observer might not even realize it's not original.

While I know that any modifications not aimed at crawling up rock walls in Utah might seem goofy (pun intended) to some, but this thing will be 99% road driven, and anyway I think it will be fun. Plus, the kids think it's a really cool idea, and I'm totally fine if some find it to be too soft (or even a bit geeky?).

So, here goes: the first (Galactic) modification is a simple billet grab bar insert from Richard at JP5 Performance Engineering. The quality is great, and I really like the way it turned out.

Custom Vinyl

So, I decided to play off of both the Sahara and Freedom editions. The theory was to design a Jeep that may have been sold before Anakin Skywalker turned to the dark side...had they not been riding around on hover thingies.

Of course, there was no Sahara desert on Tatooine, and since the name of their desert was the Dune Sea, that replaced Sahara on the side.

And rather than the five-pointed star in the circle from the Freedom Edition, I went with the eight-pointed symbol inside the circle from the Galactic Republic.

Wrangler Unlimited then gave way to Galactic Edition.

Finally, to honor the Jedi Order (as their version of the peacekeepers), I went with the Jedi symbol with the spike / light saber in the middle finished in a reflective blue (thin blue line).

Of course, no Jeep is complete without hood lettering, so I had WRANGLER translated into Aurebesh.

All vinyl work was done by Don at PixelDecals; he did an absolutely fantastic job turning my ideas into custom graphics.

Last but not least, I found an original aluminum 40th anniversary badge to replace the Trail Rated badge on the fender.

I'm not quite done, but I'm getting pretty close...

Really like the Dune Sea decals. As a Star Wars fan (that was also born on May 4th), I always liked personal touches such as this!

Real interesting concept to make up. I'd like to see where these ideas lead you...

Maybe lightsabers to clear brush from your path? Hahah...

Thanks, guys. I like that it's both subtle and close enough to the stock decals that casual observers might not even notice it, but a closer look reveals a few unique touches.

I'm working on the gear shift lever now, so stay tuned...

You know there is a guy on here who makes custom "rated badges" I would see if you can switch from that square badge to one of his. They are circular and you wouldn't believe how many people don't notice mine until they get closer

Who is he, and does he have a website?

Customized Gearshift with Star Wars Pin

I picked up a 1" silver Star Wars 1977 - 2017 40th Anniversary pin. After getting out the factory Jeep gear shift insert (don't ask...it was a pain), it fit right in with a 1" round 3M double-sided tape spot, and I sealed the gap between the bezel and the pin with an o-ring.

There was a thin spot in the bezel which popped off (bottom right side) when the factory insert popped out, so that bummed me out a bit, but it is a relatively clean, small, squared-off break, so I'm not going to sweat it for now.

Anyway, it pulls together the fender badge and grab handle insert, which then pulls together the fender decals, so I'm pretty happy with it...and it almost looks like it is supposed to be there.

Now I just need to go to the Driver's License Bureau and order my personalized plate...

Loving this! The year the first movie came out I saw it more than 20 times in the theater (my mom would use the movies as a babysitter). Definitely a fan for life.

Can't wait to see this progress. Great ideas so far.

I like this! Could make your AM/FM radio antenna look like the one on Boba Fett's helmet... Or make your satellite radio antenna look like the one on the Millenium Falcon. (Even cooler would be to make it actually point straight up when sat radio is turned on and forward when not in use.)

Ha! I am actually running a 13" AntennaX unit. I got tired of having to work around the long factory unit every time I washed theJeep.

Broke one of my wheel center caps this weekend. Gave me an idea though... replace that "X" badge in the center of your wheels with something like this.

I’m really loving what you’ve done with your Jeep. I used to have a white GTI with the license plate POD RCR and Star Wars decals. It burned down so I bought a ‘14 wrangler that’s the same color and I’ve been trying to look for ideas. Yours is the best by far that I’ve seen. Have you gotten around to any more mods?

That white paint with black trim and accents would make for a perfect stormtrooper theme!

ShelbyCobra826, I love what you're doing with your Jeep! Looks great! Not to mention one HELLUVA lot better than a Nissan Rogue: Rogue One Edition!

Jedi, I've put JWSpeaker LEDs all the way around (heads, tails, fogs) and some BARTACT grab handles, fire extinguisher holder, etc., but that's about it. I'll try to get some updated pics, but nothing more on the original theme yet.

Unfortunately, we bought a new house last winter and didn't sell our old house until this spring, so my "play money" had kinda dried up for awhile...
