Otto the MUTT

Otto (named after SGT Snorkel's mutt) is a 1972 AMG M151A2. Otto moved to Gettysburg this summer to a new home. I know some argue the M151 series isn't really a jeep, but its heritage goes back to Kaiser. The first MUTTs were manufactured by Ford and because of that, the story goes, Kaiser/Jeep/AMC wouldn't grant them the right use the vertical grill slats, hence the horizontal slats. Regardless, Otto was made by American General - the military and truck division of AMC.

AWESOME!!!!
I had one 86-87 until we got Humvees. It was amazing what those little boogers would do. Of course, you rarely could go over 45mph.

Being a MUTT driver back in the late 80's is what first got me interested in Jeeps. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Nice Jeeps. I used to drive mine (the Army's) jeep once in a while even though I wasn't supposed to. Fun on the firebreaks at Ft. Bragg and Ft. Campbell. I wish I had taken pictures of those old soldiers.

I wish I could have bought the one I drove in Germany - sucked on the highway several e hours a day on what should have only taken an hour or two. Daily drive from Landstuhl to K town, Baumholder, Pirmasens or Bad Kreuznach. I think my picture was taken in Tier.

My job was to visit and check water and food on all the bases in my area . Got tired of begging for a vehicle - no one wanted to drive the only Jeep they had .

The Jeeps we had in Korea were in very good condition . For awhile it looked like they might bring some back to the states and sell them surpluse but I think they ended up selling to other countries or scrapping them . To concerned they were unsafe driving on civilian roads. With thousands of autoban miles I would say you had to be carefull . I added a slow moving sign and extra lights to the back of my jeep those cars in Germany would be on you in a second . Raining over cast day I drove off the road several times while a car sped by - not sure if they even saw me. Watch the mirror more than the road. But that gave me an excuse to drive the long way , stop for lunch ( with a beer or two or three ) and take my time.

Being a private that gets your work done , but is always gone first thing -always gone by 7 am and never back till after 6 pm , sometimes "having " to work on weekends ( an excuse to explore German forest areas ) was not all bad. My partner / room mate missed the bus on a Saturday night coming back from a wine fest. NO worry till late Sunday. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday I drove all over that town check the jails, hospitals and bars looking for him . Thursday I figure I have to tell my Sgt I cannot find him and that I have covered for him several days and had gotton no work done for days when he comes down the hall from the shower acting like nothing is wrong. Seems he was in the first bar I stopped at but was too busy with a young lady to tell me he was there and OK.

Good Times for sure.
