Basic info for upgrades & OBD II

Hi, I just bought my first Wrangler, a 2014 JKU Rubicon X. I went to a Car Toys shop and asked about a backup camera, they said I first need to go to a dealer and get it coded to allow aftermarket equipment. I called 4 dealers and they didn't know what I was talking about.

Is there a technical name for this? I'm familiar with OBD customizations & I work in IT so maybe I can do it myself? Should I but something upfront like LockPick so I don't need to keep paying the dealer for these things? Feel free to point me to an FAQ if I missed it 🙂

You need the dealer to add the sales code XAC to the VIN, then flash the ECM for the camera. Here is a step by step procedure you can take to the dealer.

PARK VIEW REAR BACK-UP CAMERA VEHICLE CONFIGURATION

Vehicle VIN must be updated with the sales code of the added accessory in order to enable system functionality. Using the DealerCONNECT website and the StarSCAN diagnostic tool, complete the procedure below:

1. Log on to https://dealerconnect.chrysler.com

2. In the “Vehicle Option” screen under the “Global Claims System” category in the “Service” tab, enter the vehicle VIN and add the sales code XAC (Park View Rear Back-Up Camera) as a “Dealer Installed Option”.

3. Confirm that the new sales code has been successfully added to the VIN. With the StarSCAN diagnostic tool connected to both the internet (via Ethernet port or wireless connection) and the vehicle, follow the steps below:

4. Using the StarScan select the VEHICLE PREPARATION and then select RESTORE VEHICLE CONFIGURATION.

5. Follow the step by step instructions on the StarSCAN to complete the Park View Rear Back-Up Camera vehicle configuration.

6. When the Park View Rear Back-Up Camera Vehicle Configuration is complete, go to the Validation Process to verify that the vehicle has been updated.

VALIDATION PROCESS

From the “Initial Start Up” screen on the StarSCAN follow the steps below:

1. Using the StarSCAN follow the menu to ECU VIEW, select TIPMCGW CENTRAL GATEWAY, MORE OPTIONS, ECU DETAILS and then CONFIG INFO

2. Verify REAR CAMERA PRESET- - - -SET is present.

Does it make a difference if those steps are done before or after the camera is connected?

Is there a way to do it yourself?

Is there a hack to just do it yourself? Just curious if we have to go to the dealer for the mods that require this sort of update/flash. Thanks

Not if you don't want to install a Lockpick.

The dealer process involves adding a sales code to the Jeep then using the STARscan tool to flash that option to the PCM.

Hey @ProfileX ... I see you're in Denver. I just installed a BrandMotion backup cam with a Pioneer NEX unit. Meaning, I still have the unused (and sealed) OBD programming module, since I don't have the factory head unit.

It's yours if you want it. But I have no idea how to use it... and it's meant for factory head unit installs/flashing.

EDIT: Skip to 28:00 in the video below...
