Best speakers for an 87'?

My 87 only has a 4 inch speaker on each door. Problem is that when I take the doors off, I don't have music. I was looking at soundbars, but I'm not sure I want speakers directly over my head, its loud enough already! Does anyone have any experience with installing Vertically Driven Products 53301 - VDP Supreme Sound Wedges with 6" Speakers for 80-95 Jeep CJ & Wrangler YJ - Quadratec those speakers? Is there a better option?

Thanks.

i just installed them last week thier not bad the only problem i had was the speaker did not fit so i had to make the opening bigger. my children say they sound better than the cheap house speakers i had sitting on the wheel weels. to install them they just slide in thier and one screw into the roll bar. the kids like the cup holders as well.

I bought mine with a soundbar.

And a Roadmaster detachable CD player with USB port state of the art and aux for ipod.

The volume goes to 39.

I listen thru the soundbar at 39 on the freeway and in loud 2nd and 3rd gears.

Do not be intimidated by the soundbar. The jeep makes it hard to hear anyway. As an owner of one, I think your reasons for ruling it out are silly. It's really not loud over your head. Unless you are fully insulated and carpeted in which case I retract my 'silly' comment.

Just my 2 cents here... I got a pair of the speaker boxes that mount around where the seat belt retracter is... Great box.... If you are going to run with the top off or leave it off, I woulld go with marine style speakers. They are water proof and hold up to the elements.

Thanks for the replies. With so many options its hard to make a decision. I'll have to see if I can find a soundbar in town and check it out a little more.

Brent, which soundbar do you have, 2 or 6 speakers?

Thanks.

Ok, first almost every speaker in the after market is a marine speaker. Don't fall for the hype.

I have the boxes that go between the roll bar and rear wheel opening and they work great. Mine have MB Quart 6x9's in them though. I would buy empty boxes and get my own speakers if I was you. I wouldn't trust the ones they throw in there. I also have mine amped and its loud enough even with the top off to hear loud and clear. And just for good measure, I have an 8 in the back. Just to fill in the bottom end.
