CB install issues

The jeep already had a firestik II two foot antenna and coax when I bought it. Bought a Cobra 29 LX and tried to set it up but no matter what I do to tune the antenna the SWR is always around 2.5 and the radio gives an "antenna warning" message. Thinking maybe ground issues for the antenna but not sure.

I use the same antenna with a Uniden 980SSB...

I'm getting a 1.8-1.9 SWR
I have my mount grounded (you can see it in the pic) with some 12g wire.
I'd suggest going to Firestiks website and making sure the attachment at the base of the antenna (where the coax threads in) is installed correctly.

Where is your antenna mounted?
Are you making adjustments and then putting the cap back on the antenna every time you test SWR, after making an adjustment?

Edit; What does the radio owners manual say that the "antenna warning" message could mean?

It's mounted on the tire carrier. The there are rusted washers on the mount. No wasn't replacing the cap each time. I've already ordered a new mount, and fire flex cable from Firestik. Also ordered new power so I could run directly to the battery. The cable included with the radio wasn't long enough.

You need to reinstall the cap every time you make an adjustment and test SWR. It will have a slight effect on tuning.
