CB question

Will those little handheld walkie talkies like these work with real cb radios? The offroad clubs here require cbs, but I don't really want to mount one in the Jeep.

They will but you can't talk to CB's and they can't talk to you. The way we have gotten around that is toss one of those radios in with a jeep that has a CB and a co-pilot then they can relay anything to you and they can talk to everybody else.

This radio will do what you want. You can find less expensive hand held CB's but this is the only one I know of that offers the option of a nice small vehicle mount and still be able to get out and walk around.

FRS GMRS and CB run on different frequencies.

In a similar vein, will a handheld CB (such as the Midland above) be sufficient for communication on club rides and those roads where you have to monitor a CB channel for vehicle traffic ?

I'm not looking for a larger permanent installation, and the portable might be handy to take along on my offroad bike rides too.........

They work fine.
Audio isn't all that great and unless you get an external antenna, range is generally less than a mile but they work.

I thought walkie talkies had 2 channels in close or in common with CB channels.

No, CB operates in the 27MHz range while GMRS and FRS operate in the 462MHz range, I believe. You may be thinking of GMRS and FRS, which I think share 7 channels.

I've always wondered why clubs haven't slowly gravitated toward GMRS (or FRS if you're unlicensed) for comms.

I have the Midland radio pictured above, and I love it. The antenna apparently doesn't work with the vehicle adapter though, so if you're using that you'll want an external antenna. I just got mine, but I opt to run off the battery pack since I don't have the external antenna. When I tried using the vehicle adapter, the Jeep 30 feet in front of me couldn't hear me!

We started with handhelds, and realized real quick that you can't extend the antenna up for optimum performance...so graduated up to better model with the mini flex antenna. Then realized in tricky driving situation that you can't steer, shift, and run the radio with only 2 hands...and sound quality was so low you had to continually ask the 'passenger' to repeat everything...made it real difficult for fast communication. Finally broke down and installed standard 40+ channel CB. Don't have a picture but it's mounted on my 03 rubicon dash right in the 'coin tray' and didn't take half an hour to do. Cables are snaked behind the console, power is vampire clipped off the cig. lighter so it is off when key is off, and with the speaker right in the middle of the dash sound is great and everyone can hear it. Mic clip is mounted right on the CB or I can drop it in my lap while multi-tasking. Sometimes if we feel like it and are with friends in big group we also have the little handhelds just to talk to each other separately but I don't think we've done that for a year now...gotten used to everyone we ride with I guess.
CB doesn't ride up any higher than the instrument cluster surround so it 'blends in' with the dash and doesn't obstruct view. I've been in rigs with 'ceiling mounted' CB's and found the cord dangling and rocking back and forth distracting. You also have to look UP to change channels or volume...on the dash your hand moves from steering wheel right over to the radio-about a foot. Seen more and more rigs using the 'all in one' hand microphone/CB setup....just wonder about where they can mount the base unit and not worry about it getting soaked in high water situation!
