CB Radio Help

Okay guys so I really want to install a cb the only problem is I have no idea what is needed or how to install it. I know a very small bit of electrical and need almost step by step instructions on how to do this. I know this is very noobish but I need help

Go to YouTube and search it. There are many videos on how this is done. It's very simple.

Oh, OK.

It depends on what you buy (kit, particular parts) as to what else you will need, so I'll just take it item by item.

Power - you will want to wire direct to the battery, pos and neg, with a fuse reasonably close to the battery in the pos line. Run 14ga or larger wire (I would run 12), or whatever the radio maker calls for. The radio should come with a connector and some length of wire, you may need more to reach, depending on install location. It is not advisable to draw power from a cig lighter or fuse block as it will add electric noise to your radio. Same with grounding, you can add a loop if grounded too "far".

Radio - figure what and where ya want it, stick it there.

Coax - you will likely need 18' of coax cable, again depending on install location. Quality counts. Don't put sharp bends in it, and try not to run through tight areas like door jambs. If you have leftover length, loosely wrap it into a coil 12" or larger in diameter. There are generally two types of coax for this type of install, both will screw on to your so 239 plug on the radio, the difference is the other end. The fitting that attaches to a so 239 type plug is a pl 259 plug. Some cables have pl 259 on both ends, and some have a lug on the other end. The stud mount is why it matters.

Stud - you will need a stud to hold the antenna. The two most common are the firestik K4A and K4. One is for use with a screw on pl259, the other a lug connection. Make sure your cable is compatible with the stud before ordering them. If using a thread on stud there must be a nylon washer above the mount insulating the antenna from shorting to ground. If using a lug type stud, niether side can ground and they must both be insulated.

Antenna Mount - the stud is held by the mount, and it is what attaches to the vehicle, holding the antenna asembly. It must be grounded electrically.

And of course, the antenna itself.

Usually you'll buy a radio, coax, stud, mount, antenna, and spring or disconnect if desired and be set.
