CB radio installation in JK

Hi guys! I'm preparing to install a CB radio in my 2013 JKR, and I've got a couple questions (yes, I searched, but these are fairly specific). Here's what I have in mind -

Cable: Amazon.com: FireStik K-8A 18 foot single antenna coax cable: Electronics

Mount: Rugged Ridge 11503.89 CB Antenna Mount for Jeep Wrangler : Amazon.com : Automotive

Studs: Amazon.com: FireStik K4 Antenna Stud Mounts: Electronics

Quick Disconnect: Amazon.com: FireStik K-1A Push-n-Twist quick disconnect: Electronics

Spring: http://www.amazon.com/Firestik-SS-3H...I3TKE0FFEUHMTX

Antenna: Amazon.com: Firestick II 4 feet Tunable Tip - Black: Electronics

On to the questions -

1) Does anyone here have experience with these quick disconnects? I like the idea of it (since I'll have to take the antenna down to get into my garage), but it's got mixed reviews on amazon. How much more difficult is it without it (i.e., to unscrew the antenna every time)?

2) Do I really need those stud mounts, or will the antenna or spring come with all I need to attach it to the mounting bracket?

3) Is there a better place to mount the antenna without having to drill? (I'd prefer not to do any irreversible mods to my new Jeep just yet...)

4) Finally, for the radio itself, I'd like something compact and capable. I started looking at the Uniden PRO520XL because of its reviews, but I'd prefer something with weather frequencies. Then I found the Cobra 75WXST, which looks to be very feature-rich and small enough to fit in my center concole. Anyone have experience with either of these?

Also, if there's anything else I need, I'd sure like to know. I'm new to this. Thanks in advance!

I need to ask first...is this going to mainly be used off-road, or will you be using it on the highway with truckers and the like?

This is the best CB thread on the net in regards to mounting in Jeeps: http://www.jk-forum.com/jk-cb-ham-ra...ing-cbs-13899/

This is my post: http://www.jk-forum.com/jk-cb-ham-ra...9/#post3212847

The Arizona Rock Road antenna mast is great. Pricey - $37 shipped

I do have the quick disconnect. I ran it without a spring for a few weeks - no good. Get a spring. I really does not save much time from unscrewing it actually. If you do anything get a spring regardless.

The AZRR mast came with the stud. You do not need to run a wire for ground. It grounds itself. Very easy.

I have the Cobra 29LX. It is fully featured, with 10 weather stations.

My thread might be of some use: https://www.wranglerforum.com/f40/cb-...se-185225.html

I ordered my stuff from FTL Distributing, they are a vendor here. There is a checkout code you can use to save some money.

Thanks for the tips. This will just be for off-road use, so no need for really long range. I might forget about the quick disconnects, but I definitely intend to get a spring - I'd heard the Firestik antennas were pretty rigid.

I'll go through the links you posted in more detail later - been busy at work lately. Thanks again!

1st, that cable is not compatable with that stud. The cable has duel "PL-259" screw on connectors, yet that stud is for lug type cables. I think firestik K4A is what you want, double check though.

I used to run a Midland 1001LXW or somesuch, it was decent, had weather, pretty compact. Nothing great, but worth the 40 I paid for it. If I still ran a CB today, itd be a cobra 29.

The stud has to be insulated from the mount by a nylon washer on top of the mount if using a screw on style or both sides with a lug style. These washers will be with the stud you get, the spring or disco will attach to them.

I would look at the Wilson Flex-4, it seems to be much more flexible than firestik, then pop the quick disco OR spring on it. Running a disco and spring will likely take your antenna out of band range by making it too tall.

Best place to mount on a Jeep is the cowl, followed by the front bumper. Tailgate/tail light/rear bumper are about equally bad, but the higher the better.

My shillings.

& have you looked at the tread on here "Basic CB Radio buyers guide"?

Ah... didn't realize there were different connectors. I might have to go to a local shop to look at them then, since some of the descriptions on Amazon are kind of lacking.

I'll see what I can do about the location, but I'd like to avoid drilling at this point.

As for the buyers guide, I had come across that thread at one point, but I forgot to bookmark it. Thanks!

...
The k4a is what you want to go with that cable. Every mobile cb ive ever seen accepts a pl259 and so does that stud (k4a), which is what the cable you picked has. FYI, a pl259 connects to a SO-239 connector, that may be adding some confusion.

Strickerje,
Do you have the new rearview mirror? Where did you mount the cb? I have a full size Cobra 29 LTD and the mirror is an issue. Looking back at pics in threads I read all were '12 models with a "normal" mirror and this new one is larger.

Thanks.

I have my 29 mounted above my rearview in my 2012, fits perfect. How did you get a larger mirror?

I copied your setup actually! The rearview mirror on mine is thicker I believe.

I decided to purchase a Uniden Pro520XL. It fit nicely above the 2013's oversized rearview mirror no problem (thanks to lolpetewtf). I'm going to reissue the full sized Cobra to another vehicle .

Good Morning All,
As I was looking through earlier posts for an antenna mount, someone found a billet piece of what appeared to be aircraft aluminum, in an "L" shape. Anyone familiar with it? I'm going to look around.

I believe it is stainless steel. You can find it at cooltechllc.com, the gatemiunt cb antenna system.
