Enlighten me about audio systems...

So I've got an 07 JK 'X' with the stock stereo system, which I've concluded is completely inadequate. This is not a problem, however, because I planned to upgrade the system as soon as I purchased the car last month. However, I do want input from those who have upgraded as to the best decisions.

I'm looking for upgraded speakers (don't need the upgraded tweeters, however), a subwoofer (was looking into the Stealth Pod with the amp included) and a new head unit.

My questions are:
Which speakers are going to work well?
Is the stealth pod worth the cash?
What kind of head units fit the oddly shaped stock panel? I've heard something about DIN templates but don't really understand it too much to be honest....
How hard is the wiring/install going to be if I try to do it on my own?

I got a pair of Alpine type R's being pushed by a pair of 1000w kenwood amps and a 300ferrt (I think that is the rating) capacitor. In my speaker bar (I think I got to change them soon) but I got Rockfords 5 1/2's I think they are the same size as the stock cones. With my 3 year old pioneer premier head unit. Sounds good just had to take out my back seat. There is not enough room anyhow for passengers back there when the seat was in there.

I never heard a stealth pod.

There are faceplate or mounting kits that are fairly easy to install as well as get yourself a wiring harness to plug into the stock plug so you are not butchering up the wires for a cleaner install.

If you understand the wiring its simple. I ran my wires under the center console to the rear and I had a rubber plug in the center of my firewall where I could run my power wire from the battery to the capacitor then to the amps and a ground right to a bolt in the body.

I'm a BIG fan of Soundstream. The Tarantula line is amazing. I was running a pair of their 4x6's in my truck and they were very loud and clear. I was also running 2 Soundstream 10" RW reference series subs, 500watts ea. off of a 400watt audiobahn amp (BTW, audiobahn sucks! Stay away from their stuff). I put one of the subs in my TJ with that amp and its amazing, even in my crappy box I built.

As far as the deck, I would just get the install kit, which will make the stock radio opening fit whatever deck you choose. I would recommend a Pioneer Premier deck. The wiring is a pain in the ass for the head unit IMO because the wires were different colors than what was on the harness that came with the head unit.

Never dealt with a stealth pod. If you can do wood work, I would say just build your own box.

I have an Alpine head-unit and a Rockford Fosgate twelve inch sub woofer in the back pushed by a 400 watt Rockford Fosgate amp. I did all the wiring by myself and it took a while because I am a perfectionist and I wanted to make sure no wires were seen, but its not too hard. I mean I did mine when I was still in high school. I absolutely love the clarity it puts out and I have no regrets.
